  1. standard cockatoos are the ones you see in the pet stores, all white witha little pink in their crests.

  2. the ones that are easiest to take care of are goffins, galahs, and bare eyeds. The bigger they are, the harder to care for they will be.They also are the more emotional ones, and said to be the ones that have more issues to care for.Smaller ones are a lil more independent and easily amused, while larger ones require more interaction and visual stimulation.

  3. If you have never had a large bird like this. Do a little research. Cockatoos can be kind of 'needy', requiring more attention than other birds. They are loud as most parrots are and if you can't handle the noise, don't get one.

They can be prone to feather plucking when unhappy or bored.

  5. Be prepared for a life-long commitment, as any breed of cockatoo lives between 60-80 years and will probably outlive YOU!

Cockatoos are expensive and labor-intensive to feed and will get bored with being served the same foods over and over. Keep in mind the ideal diet is 80%fruits and veggies. I cook more for my 'too than I do for myself.

'Toos are highly emotional birds and tend to pluck out their feathers if their emotional needs aren't met. I've seen some with NO feathers at all. They are known to sometimes macerate themselves to the point of death once the feathers are gone and they have nothing left to pick at.

They need at least 4 hours of interaction a day to keep from going stir-crazy and lonely. They need to be in the cage and covered at about sundown, as they need 12 hrs. of sleep every night. My Lesser Sulfur Crested does very well with such a schedule. I'm home most of the day and take him with me whenever possible, so he gets tons of attention/interaction to satisfy his "flock mentality".

Mood swings are common during puberty (5-7 years of age), just as they are in humans. This is particularly true of Mollucans.

You may want to consider a caique or Meyer's parrot. They're cute and only live about 20 years.

Sorry to be so negative, but you needed to be warned.
