  1. Depends... but i recomend a macaw! Cockatoos are too common.

  2. Cockatoos have a 80 year life expectancy.

    Macaws life 40-80 years.

Do you think you can handle the responsibility of a pet for that long?  Most people can't even keep their cat or dog for their own life span (10-20 years).

Unless you rescue an older bird (and even if you do actually) you will probably end up having to write the bird into your will.

You will also need to spend a ton of money on a good size cage, bird toys, bird food, fruit, veggies, vet visits....

Whichever you choose, I hope you take good care of it.

Oh and I just heard at the vets office the other day that these kinds of birds have flying p**p.  Until other kinds of birds like finches they p**p flies out of the cage.  A vet tech was pooped in the face twice by a bird (kind of funny).  Anyways, make sure your willing to put up with stuff like that too.

  3. I'd prefer cokatoos. I love them.

  4. if you are *seriously* basing your decision on a question asked in a Q & A forum like this.....

... you shouldn't get ANY parrot - macaw OR cockatoo!

Start off with a cockatiel or a budgie.  They are much smaller, require less expensive foods and toys, smaller cages and don't make enough noise to p**s off neighbors, parents or other people around you.

  5. i would say cockatoo!! they are really cute and i love their white feathers. well for mollucan and umbrella cockatoos. they are really big though so you have to have a really big flight cage so the cockatoo can fly easly and be happy when your not around to play with it. macasws are nice but i perwsonally dont really like their faces. it kinda scares me. also cockatoos live really long. but if your not willing to take care of the cockatoo for more than  30 years or 40 years i suggest you get a macaw because they live up to 40-80 years.

  6. Well, you need to remember that a cockatoo does require more physical attention than a macaw.  Both birds can be very noisy and loud.  A cockatoo is more apt to pick feathers than a macaw.  I think most of the decision should come from whether or not you have a lot of free time to spend with this bird.  A cockatoo can have very special needs at time.  I have worked with and own both kinds of birds.  Please read my profile.

And by the way, there is no "flying p**p" involved with either bird.  Man, some people will post anything.

  7. I perfer cockatoos! They are just adorable! I have had 2!

  8. i have an umbrella cockatoo and shes my world id get a cockatoo they are just so pasionate and lovey

  9. cockatoos i had like 5 of them =]

  10. I like macaws. They are really pretty.

  11. I can't make that decision for you, but here is some info that may help you decide;

Cockatoos are more hands-on, affectionate birds that are more demanding of attention.  This does not mean that they should be spoiled – give them as much attention as you realistically can from day one.  These are very empathetic, EMOTIONAL birds!  They do NOT do well if left alone in a cage all day, and they simply have more needs than most other parrots.

These birds are great at figuring out how to undo things and how to escape from their cages – many of them WILL NOT stay on a perch if you leave the room for a minute, so beware!  It is my opinion, that sadly, most people are not suited to a Moluccan Cockatoo (because of how loud, hard and persistent their scream can be), or an Umbrella Cockatoo.

Umbrellas are the #1 rescue bird – people just seem to have so many problems with them, whether it is their scream, or biting or plucking, or other misbehaviors that they can develop if not handled properly.  And yet, at the same time, if you have a sweet bird, they can be the best pet imaginable!  I honestly feel that many people create problems with these birds because they don't understand them, and they don't do the proper research before they get them.  There is the calm, gentle Umbrella who will go to anyone for cuddling and attention, and there is the Umbrella who will choose a favorite person and not want to have anything to do with other family members.  Then there is a wide range of personalities in between.  There are a few things I will mention here.  It is not a good idea to have your bird on a set routine where he comes out of the cage at the same time everyday, or the instant that you walk in the door.  What if your schedule changes, and you can't take your bird out at 5:15 pm every day like you used to?  All birds have internal alarm clocks -- he will let it be known at 5:15 that he wants OUT, OUT, OUT!!!!  They should be taught to play happily and contentedly in their cage, even when you're there and could take him out.  If your bird has been out for awhile, and decides that he wants to hop up and down, spread his wings, and do figure 8's with his head -- by all means, put him in his cage or on a perch!  Don't get bitten because of over-excitement or over-stimulation.  Learn to read your bird's facial expressions and body language, you will both be glad that you did!

There are other cockatoos to consider – there is the smaller Goffin’s, the beautiful Rose-breasted, and the Sulfur-crested cockatoos.

Cockatoos and African Greys emit a tremendous amount of dander (Cockatoos are the worst), so if you are asthmatic or have any type of breathing problem, these are not the birds for you!

    MACAW PROFILE:

Macaws are beautiful, brilliantly colored members of the parrot family.

Many macaws have vibrant plumage. The coloring is suited to life in Central and South American rain forests, with their green canopies and colorful fruits and flowers. The birds boast large, powerful beaks that easily crack nuts and seeds, while their dry, scaly tongues have a bone inside them that makes them an effective tool for tapping into fruits.

Macaws also have gripping toes that they use to latch onto branches and to grab, hold, and examine items. The birds sport graceful tails that are typically very long.

Macaws are intelligent, social birds that often gather in flocks of 10 to 30 individuals. Their loud calls, squawks, and screams echo through the forest canopy. Macaws vocalize to communicate within the flock, mark territory, and identify one another. Some species can even mimic human speech.

Flocks sleep in the trees at night, and in the morning they may fly long distances to feed on fruit, nuts, insects, and snails. Some species also eat damp soil, which may help to neutralize chemicals in their fruity diet and ease their stomachs.

Macaws typically mate for life. They not only breed with, but also share food with their mates and enjoy mutual grooming. In breeding season, mothers incubate eggs while fathers hunt and bring food back to the nest.

There are 17 species of macaws, and several are endangered. These playful birds are popular pets, and many are illegally trapped for that trade. The rain forest homes of many species are also disappearing at an alarming rate.

Hyacinth, red-fronted, and blue-throated macaws are seriously endangered. The glaucus macaw and Spix's macaw may already be extinct in the wild.

  12. Cockatoos are sweeter and more affectionate. very, very affectionate, its like having a baby that never grows up. if you can handle the responsibility and expense for like 30 years, they make great pets. Macaws are also affectionate, but not quite so needy.

  13. I prefer cockatoos but it's really a personal opinion.

    I hope this helped!

  14. The Cockatoo is more entertaining.

  15. Macaw cookatoos are really for extremley advanced bird keepers.. as are macaws I say macaws
