Coco Ho and Lakey Peterson successfully move into Quarter-finals at Rip Curl Women’s Pro Bells Beach
Hawaii’s Coco Ho and America’s Lakey Peterson successfully claimed top honours in their respective Round 4 heats of Rip Curl Women’s Pro Bells Beach presented by Ford Fiesta that continued at the primary event site of Bells Beach in Victoria, Australia,
on Friday, April 6.
Ho got the better of America’s Courtney Conlogue in the third heat to advance through into the Quarter-finals while bringing the competition to a premature end for her rival.
The fourth heat saw Peterson take the win over Peru’s Sofia Mulanovich in the fourth heat of Round 4 to confirm her place in the Quarter-finals while removing the latter from the contention for the event title.
The top female surfers from around the globe in attendance at Bells Beach promised nothing but the top-notch action for the fans. The second stop of the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Tour had delivered a heavy dose of thrilling
surfing action over the course of initial rounds and was expected to become even more gripping with the competition entering its crucial stages.
The third heat pitted both Ho and Conlogue against each other in a battle for the coveted Quarter-final spot. Both the surfers were determined to collect a successful result to progress into the next stage of the competition in order to earn ASP Women’s
World Tour ranking points.
As the third heat got underway, Ho initiated an aggressive hunt for a good score right away. Locking her first business-wave in the opening minutes of the heat, she managed to post a 7.50 on the score-board. Keeping the momentum going, she went on to catch
another juicy wave and unloaded a string of exquisite tricks on it to add an additional 8.27 points to her account.
Conlogue responded with a pretty impressive performance a well, scoring an 8.83 off her first business-wave and adding an additional 5.67 points to her account to finish with a heat-total of 14.50 points. However, the 1.27-point deficit forced her to concede
victory to her rival.
The fourth heat saw Peterson and Mulanovich take each other on in a battle for survival in clean four-to-six foot waves.
The American surfer got off to a modest start, but gradually built momentum to eventually post a 7.33 and 8.10 on the score-board to finish with a heat-total of 15.43 points.
Mulanovich had been struggling to find consistency in her form at Bells Beach since the very first day. She failed to find her rhythm during her battle for Peterson to consequently finish with a heat-total of 11.73 points, which included a 3.33 and 8.40-point
wave. The lacklustre performance proved costly for her as it got her eliminated from the competition while paving way for her rival to advance into the Quarter-finals.
