Coco Vandeweghe ousts Aravane Rezai to reach quarters – Citi Open 2012
Seventh seeded Coco Vandeweghe took down the French qualifier, Aravane Rezai, in straight sets at the Citi Open 2012 on Wednesday. She penned down a 6-2, 6-2 victory against the world number 132 to secure a spot in the final eight at this WTA (Women’s Tennis
Association) International-level tournament taking place in Washington D.C, United States.
The seeded American outshined Rezai completely in their fourth match-up at this outdoor hard court tournament. After registering the success in 64 minutes, Vandeweghe not only avenged her loss at the Auckland WTA event earlier this circuit but also extended
her lead in the head-to-head series by 3-1 against the French starlet.
"I have played Rezai before, and I feel like those two times I was a totally different player than I was today," Vandeweghe commented in a courtside interview after clinching the match. "I went in with the game plan that if I played my patterns and my game,
I was going to beat her. That's what I did, and I felt even more comfortable on the court today than I did in my first round. I am happy with the result."
The wildcard recipient, Vandeweghe stormed into the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center. She drew the first blood in the second game and leaped to a 3-0 lead before the French could come on the score sheet. The American swiped her remaining serves with
self-assurance and cashed in another break chance in the last game, eventually sealing the opener with a 6-2 win.
Ranked 73rd in the WTA Premier Rankings, Vandeweghe perfected her game in the following set. She plucked her entire serves without encountering any breakpoint and capitalised on two out of four break chances to click the set with a 6-2 success.
Overall, Vandeweghe dusted away all seven breakpoints to earn the fame. She also fired 11 aces and impressively marked 23 out of 29 points on her first serve share of 57 per cent.
Next up for Vandeweghe is her fourth seeded compatriot, Vania King, who tumbled Irina Falconi in straight sets to set up this battle. King was broken four times but cashed in half of the 12 break opportunities to manipulate a 6-2, 7-6(5) score line.
