Coco Vandeweghe powers through Urszula Radwanska to reach her first WTA semi – WTA Stanford 2012
American tennis prodigy, Coco Vandeweghe, carried on her sublime run of form to earn a place in her first ever WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Tour-level semi-final on Friday. The 120th ranked youngster outplayed the
upcoming Pole starlet, Urszula Radwanska, in the quarter-final brawl of Bank of the West Classic tournament, settling the final score line in twin sets, 6-4, 6-4, in her favour.
Radwanska is currently rate at number 57 in the WTA premier Rankings and her loss to a far inferior-ranked opponent was a shocker for the Pole tennis fans. The 21-year-old was performing superbly in the initial rounds of the tournament
and was bidding for her first semi-final berth on the Tour. Her efforts went in vain and Vandeweghe stormed past her to move a step closer to her first WTA title shot in Stanford, USA.
Radwanska defeated the 20-year-old American in the final of an ITF (International Tennis Federation) grass court event in Nottingham last month. It was the payback time for Vandeweghe and she delivered a high quality performance
to overwhelm the Pole contestant in a convincing manner.
"I was pretty mad about losing in the last round in qualifying," Vandeweghe said in her post match reviews. "I had the match on my racquet and didn't play well on that day - of course you can't play well every day. But I seem to
be doing a pretty good job of picking myself back up and putting a lot of good matches together these days. I've been putting a lot of hard work in, on and off the court, and I knew it would translate into my matches sometime. And I'm glad it's here in Stanford."
Despite of a below par first serve precision of 44 per cent in the contest, Vandeweghe clinched 24 out of 27 points on it and broke Radwanska three out of six times en route to victory. She kept the faults to a minimum and cashed
in most of her opportunities to come out as the deserving winner. Fifth seed Belgian, Yanina Wickmayer, is up next for the American youngster in the semi-final draw.
