Coco Vandeweghe stuns Jelena Jankovic in the second round – Bank of the West Classic 2012
Lucky loser from the qualifying draw, Coco Vandeweghe, has made a huge impact on the Bank of the West Classic tournament on Wednesday by dismissing the former world number one, Jelena Jankovic of Serbia, in the second round brawl.
The 120th ranked American stunned the fourth seeded Serbian tennis ace in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, to reach the quarter-finals of the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International Tour event being held in Stanford, USA.
It was the biggest upset of the tournament, with one of the hot favourites falling out to a player rated 99 places below her in the WTA World Rankings. Jankovic had defeated Vandeweghe on two prior occasions (in 2008 US Open and
then in 2011 Indian Wells Masters) but it was the payback time for the 20-year-old. She had to overcome some early resistance from the Serb veteran but once she found her winning groove, it was an all-American show afterwards. Vandeweghe just blasted her way
past Jankovic in the second set, sparing barely two games for her and concluding her emphatic victory in an assertive fashion.
Jankovic evenly matched her underrated opponent in most segments of the game but couldn’t take the better of her while registering break points in the contest. The former world number one could come up with just two out of her
eight break points, whilst Vandeweghe nailed five out of nine cracking ones to surpass her. The 20-year-old American dropped merely six points on first serve, bagging 20 out of 26 en route to a comprehensive victory.
Jankovic tried to counter the onslaught from Vandeweghe in the opening set and registered two break points but the ‘lucky loser’ stung three breaks of serves to race past her. Losing the opener in a dismal manner, Jankovic couldn’t
convert any of her two break opportunities and dropped her serve twice instead. Vandeweghe closed out the contest at 6-2 to come out as the jubilant winner and booked a spot in the quarter-final round.
Vandeweghe will next face the winner of the second round match between the eighth seed Marina Erakovic and Urszula Radwanska later this week.
