Coco Vandeweghe upsets Su-Wei Hsieh to reach the semi-finals – AEGON Trophy 2012 CH
American qualifier, Coco Vandeweghe, who is just 20-year-old registered yet another upset in the quarter-final of the AEGON Trophy; smashing the likes of the 26-year-old Taiwanese, Su-Wei Hsieh, in a classic three-setter. She bounced
back a set down to post the scores 2-6, 7-5, 6-4.
The second seed Taiwanese was totally stunned in the second and third part of the match where she received stupendous resistance and committed number one unforced errors out of frustration. She needed to win this match to confirm
her position in the London Olympics, later this year. She is hanging around the corner as she is ranked 64 in the world and the Top-64 players will receive a direct entry into the contest.
Hsieh started the match in commanding fashion; winning the first breakthrough in the sixth game of the match. She continued to exert pressure on the American qualifier and grabbed another breakthrough to post a resounding first
set triumph.
Start to the second set witnessed a taxing battle between the two players. They kept on knocking at the door but no one grabbed an early break and the scores were pushed to 4-4 without any drama at all. However, the swap of breakpoints
kept the set alive for both players but the American qualifier sunk the Taiwanese after registering another breakthrough in the 11th game. She held her serve to 40:15 and levelled the set score at one apiece.
Hsieh was still the better player at the grass courts of Nottingham. The second seed Taiwanese started off the final set in emphatic fashion; holding a serve to love. However, it had little effect on the 20-year-old American. Vandeweghe
broke serve in the seventh game and took a lead. It looked like the frustration had crept in the game style of the second seed and she started making a lot of unforced errors; gifting the lead to her rival.
The final game of the match witnessed two opportunities to break serve for the second seed Taiwanese but she squandered them and lost the match. Vandeweghe will contest the semi-final match against the 81st ranked Briton,
Anne Keothavong.
