We will dig the trench ourselves .What scares me is we had two electricans give us estimates and they both have different code rules one says trech must be 12 in. the other says 18. any Clue? also they say we need a conveince box? not sure what that is and why! anything else we need to know to pass inspection?! Thanks Tina

  1. Ask both electricians to show you the code rule in writing. Licensed electricians should be able to show you this from their code book. If they don't have the book, they're probably not licensed!

When you get the work done, make sure the invoice states that the installation is guaranteed to pass inspection. Otherwise, if you need to call them back, you may get charged extra.

Contact your county/township/city (whichever applies) building inspector and ask him your specific questions. You can find him in either the Yellow/Blue Pages or do a Google search using the name of your county/township/city and the words "building inspector".

A conveyance box (also known as a junction box) is container for electrical junctions, usually intended to conceal them from sight and to some extent to eliminate tampering and protect them from the weather. Your building inspector can tell you whether you need one or not.
