Cody Ross’ RBI single to edge San Francisco Giants past Arizona Diamondbacks for fourth straight win: MLB Update
Cody Ross hit an RBI single in ninth for the San Francisco Giants to take the first outing against the Arizona Diamondbacks by 1-0 at the AT&T Park on Tuesday night, May 10, to take 1-0 lead in three-game series.
Ross hit an RBI single down to the third base off the D-backs’ closer, David Hernandez, scoring Darren Ford from second. The Giants enjoyed last at-bat win for the third time in four games which they have played.
The Giants’ starter, Tim Lincecum allowed just four hits, allowed two walks and struck out nine batters in eight innings. It was Lincecum’s nineteenth career outing without giving a hit in at least seven innings.
Lincecum was brilliant in pitching. He gave his first hit in sixth inning, giving the defending World Series Champion with the fourth consecutive victory first time in this season.
"We kind of have that fire going into those last innings knowing that anything can happen," Lincecum said. "And stuff like this does, and it seems to happen to us quite a bit."
The closer, Brian Wilson, pitched a perfect ninth inning for his third win of the season, giving the club back-to-back shutout in two games. It was also the first time Arizona held score-less in 2011.
Lincecum also spoiled a stellar outing by the D-backs’ starter Ian Kennedy, who tossed eight shutout innings. Kennedy gave just four hits, allowed three walks and took out eight batters for his first loss of the season. Kennedy now has 3-1 record with a
3.23 ERA.
Hernandez started the ninth giving Buster Posey a led off four-pinch walk. He then struck out Aubrey Huff before Ross touched a line drive passing near the third baseman Melvin Mora for another late-inning triumph. The Giants already had five walk-off wins
this season.
"That's been the story of my season so far is walking guys, especially leadoff guys," Hernandez said. "Eventually it's going to come back and get you, and today was one of those days."
Hernandez tossed eight strikes of thirteen pitches and lost his game despite having exceptional 2.16 ERA.
The D-backs’ nine batters played for 30 combined at-bats and managed just five hits. Four of these batters could not manage a single hit except appearing for at least three at-bats each.
The Giants gave the same condition, who sent eleven batters into plate for combined 28 at-bats and just five of them could touch a ball for line drive single.
