Cody Ross approached by New York Mets, according to sources-MLB Update
In order to fill their vacant spot in the outfield, New York Mets have approached free agent Cody Ross.
According to the sources close to the matter, the Mets are pursuing him aggressively, hoping that they sign him at a reasonable price.
If the asking price of Ross is considered, it looks unlikely that the Mets can clinch an agreement with him.
Their financially weak position makes it hard for them to attract him towards the organisation.
Another reason why Ross can hesitate to join the Mets is the lack of Division title winning credentials of the club. Every free agent wants to move to a team, which possesses star players and has the potential to win the glories ahead.
While choosing their prospective organisations, along with money, they give due importance to this factor.
It is unknown yet as to whether Ross has responded to the interest of New York for his acquisition positively.
If the Mets agree to a possible deal with Ross, it will become even harder for them to offer contract extension to R.A Dickey.
The Mets are engaged in talks with Dickey for the last many weeks but so far they have struggled to come to terms with him.
The money that they can afford to give him is almost unacceptable for Dickey, who is boosted by his successful 2012 season campaign and thus is asking more.
Dickey won the Cy Young Award, which means he has every reason to ask for the desired deal from the Mets.
The Mets have many other issues to deal, other than the retention of Dickey this offseason. They are equally conscious about the pressing needs of finding outfielders for their 2013 Major League regular season campaign.
For the same reason, they have put aside the issue of Dickey for a while and have decided to begin talks with Ross.
They will be trying their best to fetch Ross at a price, which does not ruin their spending capacity. They cannot afford to empty their treasury after signing one player.
It will be interesting to see as to what extent their negotiations with Ross turn out to be successful.
