Cody Thompson claims victory at 2013 Rip Curl Pro Puerto Rico
America’s Cody Thompson took out the 2013 Rip Curl Pro Puerto Rico presented by seepuertorico.com after putting on registering just enough score in the final that went down at JOBOS in Isabella, Puerto Rico, on Wednesday, February 13.
His compatriot Andrew Doheny finished behind him in second place, while the third American in the heat, Evan Geiselman, had to settle for third position. Local talent Dylan Graves took fourth position, not something that he would have hoped for after doing
so well over the past week to reach the final.
The 23-year-old Thompson had been nothing short of impressive throughout the course of the competition, delivering one exquisite performance after another to steadily make his way through the initial rounds and eventually the quarter-final and semi-final
to earn his place in the final four.
With the conditions continuing to remain pretty demanding on the final day of the latest Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) event, all four finalists found themselves struggling to get their hands on a good wave and consequently a good score.
However, Thompson made his determination to walk away a winner by remaining busy locking wave after wave, trying hard to get something out of them.
After much effort, he finished with a heat-total of 10.10 points, which comprised of a 5.17 and 4.93-point ride. The score proved just sufficient to seal the fate o f the battle in his favour.
“There were just a couple of medium range scores and I just went and sat by myself,” Thompson said. “Andrew (Doheny) got one in the end and went in to the lead and I knew I didn’t need much. I took off at the end and finally got a little bowl and had two
turns. It just worked out. When they said the score I just couldn’t believe it. My brothers were running down the beach and I was just so psyched.”
Doheny came dangerously close to beating his rival’s heat-total, scoring a 6.33 off his last wave of the heat, which combined with his second-best wave-score of 3.63 to take him to a heat-total of 9.96 points. Thus, he was forced to settle for second place.
Geiselman did not finish too far behind, registering a heat-total of 9.83 points, while Graves finished with a two-wave total of 8.96 points.
