Coffee Friday. Can you please answer these hockey questions?

1. Roller Skates were invented around the same time as ice skates (not used for hunting). If hockey that we all love so much was developed and played using roller skates, do you believe it would have become as largely popular as ice hockey is now?

2. Many times at hockey arenas, they use the organ to get people energized. If the first music orchestrator of a hockey arena used an accordion, do you think he would have succeeded in getting people excited about the game?

3. I find the net at the end of the ice distracting while at the game. Why doesn’t the NHL, use a fishing line type materiel, so that people’s eyes aren’t constantly focusing on the black thick squares in front of them? Or do you have a better idea?

4. It is a rule in MLB that teams are not allowed to wear jerseys with baseball (logos) on the front, because of distraction and confusion. Is it strange that some teams are allowed to wear black skates/socks/shorts when the puck is black?

5. The penalty box has a guy that opens the door for you, a bench all to yourself, and an abundance of water bottles and towels. What should the NHL do to make the “penalty” box more austere with fewer accommodations?

  1. 1. I think that the music played in roller rinks would drive hockey players crazy. But, I did learn to roller skate at the old Mutual Street Arena, home of the Toronto St. Pats.

    2. Walter is able to get people excited about anything.

    3. My eyes have never been distracted by black fishnet ......

       Where was I?

    4. They should make them play with the fluorescent Fox hockey puck if they want to wear black.

    Now about the black fishnet....

    5. The heat should be turned up to 40 degrees C (about 100 F). Heat lamps and no water bottles. Make it like a Texas afternoon with the heat and humidity. It'll be a little like h**l so they won't want to come back. Piped in music from answer #2 would help too.

  2. 1.no

    2. yea

    3. I never noticed that, so it doesn't bother me. Ir I have noticed it, but I didn't care

    4. So much gear, and many jerseys have black, it would cause the NHL thousands if not millions of dollars to make that a rule, and cause change.

    5. Think of it from the players point of view. Some times, these could be necessary

  3. Probably not, certainly not in Canada.  Back when hockey was developing we had more ice than any other smooth surface to play on.  Still do in lots of small towns

    2) Only in the Maritimes- the accordion is popular back east

    3) It bugs me too ( maybe we are drinking too much at the game and have focusing issues) , most use black also- it seems to me that white ice- white netting is not much of a stretch.  I do believe a couple of arenas have the white stuff.

    4) Not an issue really, teams can still wear white in baseball, it is the logo that would mess up a batter.

    5) Maybe you should be forced to do a shot of tequila (2 if your team gets scored on) and add a few nails to the bench.  It is a pretty comfortable sin bin.

  4. 1) No. There are plenty of roller hockey places everywhere these days. There has even ben pro roller hockey . (it may still be around I am not sure) But it would not even be close to the same. Roller is totally different and some speed and moves would be lost. That is due to the fact of different manuverability on ice as opposed to the roller floor.

2)No. People would only get energized to throw  stuff at that guy.

3)It gets tuned out by me for the most part. Why are the Bolts using a black net? The Cats use white. It is easier to look past. Anyway I am used to it playing with a helmet cage you get used to looking past that kind of stuff.

4)No. Baseball has some strange rules at times.

5)Cattle prod that hits you when you sit down.

  5. 1. No

    2. no

    3. dont buy ticked there

    4. No

    5. nothing

  6. 1- No. Ice hockey would have overtaken it eventually

2- I do believe you'll find accordions in the stands in Europe.

3- I never have any problem..seriously. Maybe it's your eyes and you need corrective lenses? Your eyes might be drawn to the netting. Either that or the "shrooms" you ate before game time are kicking in.

4- Ya...lets dress 'em all in pink.

5- Snakes would do it for me.

PS...white vs black was intensivly tested for the mesh and black always came out better.

  7. 1. no, because it's just a totally different game then

    2. sure i dont see why not. geez, i can never find that dang organ!

    3. i think it's fine as is. it's never been distracting to me

    4. yes, and it's unfair

    5. close it in, make it dark and small

  8. 1.No, i don't think it would of had so much hype in Canada and Northern states, because a lot of people had backyard ice rinks. Roller hockey doesn't really interest me, but i guess its generally the same.

2.No, I don't consider accordions very exciting, but i guess if he played the right music he could.

3.I sit behind the net and that black net gets on my nerves. It takes me awhile to get adjusted to it, but after awhile i doesn't bother me. But like you were saying they should use some fishing line materiel or something.

4.The players should still be able to see the puck, so i don't think it really matters.

5.They should get rid of the guy who opens the door, the players can open their own door!

  9. 1.  No, I think roller skates limit movement too much.  They are far too cumbersome.  Even if "roller skate technology" improved, thus bringing about lighter, stronger, or more flexible skates, the fact that they have four big a$$ wheels sitting two-wide wouldn't make for the same fast pace.  Even though more people could play it if it were not on ice, I don't think anybody would want to.

    2.  I can't say.  It would either be rejected and that first music orchestrator would be fired, or it might become some sort of comical tradition that we would come to love.  I would go with the former, however.

    3.  Sometimes when the net is lowered and raised it is tangled, caught, or hung up on the glass and other structures.  The reason they use the black net (this was explained to me in a summer house league by a zamboni driver, so he may have been wrong but I don't believe so because he was also head of arena maintenance) is so that they can visually confirm that the net is protecting the desired area.  If it was clear and somehow got hung up or tangled, it may leave an area of seating unprotected.  This is a liability for the arena owner and management, so I think they will probably remain black.  They also use a fairly heavy material, so I don't believe they would switch to a material as thin as fishing line.

    4.  It is somewhat unfair, and I think that is why many teams have an alternate black jersey.  Some of them are just for looks, but I think visibility was also in mind when they were approved.  Still, this happens in any sport.  I knew teams in football that used brown jerseys to their advantage, teams in lacrosse that used white jerseys (most sticks and pockets are white though anyway...), etc.  Black is a color you really can't get around in hockey.  So many generic pieces of equipment are black or white simply for mass production.  It would be a pain in the a$$ for the NHL to make a ruling against certain types of black gear.  I think the industry (Easton, NikeBauer, ITECH, etc.) would be up in arms if there was a sudden shift away from black gear, especially if all other levels of hockey followed.

    5.  Mount a 42" Samsung 1080p LCD with a 25000:1 contrast ratio running at 120 Hz directly above the door, in front of the player.  Make sure it is complimented by a HD digital cable package.  Then, cancel all of the networks and show reruns of Seinfeld in HD with a Bose 7.1 surround sound system.  Make every penalty unreleasable, so they are forced to watch and listen as Jerry Seinfeld makes an a$$ of himself when he says things that nobody laughs at, but that he clearly thinks are hiliarious.

EDIT - Like BeerSlayer said, I don't think the net is really that distracting, but maybe if you start focusing on it then it gets annoying.

Snakes would keep me out of the sin bin as well.

    Thumbs down?  Kill yourself?

  10. 1.) Who hunts for ice skates.....roller skates are much, much easier to shoot.

2.) Nothing is more exciting then a man pounding on his organ in a crowd of people.

3.) Good question. I have no idea. Maybe invisible fence would work.

4.) This is why Hossa wanted to be a wing, so he can hide on the red line, like a chameleon and cherry pic without being seen.

5.) Put a hole in the bench, so the player has the option to pinch a grumpy, of tear off a deuce will he's is in solitary.

  11. 1. Not a chance, hockey players can't even hold onto the puck for more than a few seconds. How do you think they would be able to hold onto the key needed to tighten the roller skates onto their shoes?

    2. Only if the audience was made up mostly of Polish people.

    3. Some arenas do use the monofiliment type netting, but the rink workers keep using it to catch bait fish for the show "Deadliest Catch" to supplement their income.

4.Yeah, I agree. Hey I know, let's take apart a kid' light up shoe, and stick those little l.e.d. lights in a puck, that way the guy with all the funny pads on could see it better, and we would have shutouts all the time!

    5. Tell Motel 6 to redecorate the penalty box, that will get rid of the accommodations...

  12. 1.) No, roller skates don't go as fast as ice skates.

2.) Yeah!!  Accordians are crazy.  Except people might think it's a circus.

3.) It doesn't really bother me, but I would think they could use a more sheer material...like panty hose.  haha jk.  But I think fishing line could get tangled.

4.) No, it hides the puck better, but hockey players are smart enough not to get that confused.

5.) No water or towels, and they should hire the guy in the box to be rude and grumpy.

  13. 1. nah ice hockeys too amazing

    2.  eww i hope not hah

    3. Well that would be a good idea at least its not like lime green

    4. yeah i guess but hockeys a completely different sport

    5. wow um maybe they should hang it from the jumbotrons so everyone can see them
