  1. Since cognitive restructuring means to change faulty thinking, talk therapy is the technique used most often. The client will discuss his or her belief system surrounding their depression, anxiety or rage. Then several techniques will be taught. These include:

*Bringing the person's internal monologue, into to their awareness because the theory is that what we tell ourselves about a situation will spark out moods. The therapist will them teach the person to replace these monologues, with more soothing monologues.

    * Once the person becomes aware of these monologues, the therapist will teach the person to reframe the thoughts using some of the following questions:

    # Is this thought really true?

    # Am I overemphasizing a negative aspect of this situation?

    # What is the worst thing that could happen?

    # Am I catastrophizing, "awfulizing", jumping to conclusions, and assuming a negative outcome?

    # How do I know this situation will turn out this way?

    # Is there another way to look at this situation?

    # What difference will this make next week, month, or year?

    # If I had one month to live, how important would this be?

    # Am I using words like "never", "always", "worst", "terrible", or "horrible" to describe the situation?
