Coil gains Baffert’s confidence and earns his inclusion in the Grade 1 Travers Stakes after a stellar training session

Trainer Bob Baffert was looking for a way to get his Haskell Invitational winner colt, Coil out of the Grade 1 Travers Stakes over fitness issues not more than a week ago, but now it seems that Baffert is happy after watching his champion colt breeze a distance
of half a mile on the morning of 23 August, 2011 at the Saratoga main track.

The $1million Travers Stakes will commence on 27 August, 2011, and the 3-year-old Point Given colt and his trainer are all in to appear in the midsummer derby.

Bob Baffert was having his doubts about Coil going in to the Travers Stakes because of his unusual work out routines. Coil was making things difficult and Bob Baffert was sure that there is something wrong with the colt, as his movement and training style
suggested.

However, things have fallen into perspective for the veteran conditioner as he took a good look at his colt from the Saratoga grand stand, as his colt turned in a four furlongs bullet workout in 46.12 seconds which left the trainer satisfied enough to consider
the Travers yet again.

While the training session at Saratoga Coil was accompanied by his work mate, Prayer for Relief, who won himself the West Virginia Derby.

It was business as usual for Baffert as he pointed Martin Garcia to mount Coil and to start him 5 lengths behind his work mate Prayer for Relief. Coil ran a good one on one and was able to catch up with Prayer for Relief on the upper stretch.

Coil was able to edge out Prayer for Relief by a mere neck, finishing the final five furlongs in 58.58 seconds.

The 3-year-old has recently landed the $1million Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park, which automatically makes him a favourite for the Saratoga feature, the Travers Stakes.

Coil is 3 of 4 this season, with his only defeat coming in the Grade 2 Swaps Stakes at Hollywood Park, also run over a distance of 1 1/8 miles on 9 July, 2011.
