Coil works a bullet as he prepares for his next best test, the Grade 1 Travers Stakes at Saratoga
The Haskell Invitational winner Coil is eyeing his next target, the Grade 1 Travers Stakes at Saratoga, and he looks to be on the right track after working a bullet on the Saratoga main track as he breezed a brisk four furlongs' run in approximately 46.15
seconds on 10 August, 2011.
After an inspiring workout, trainer Bob Baffert said his Haskell champion will contest in the Grade 1 Travers Stakes to be held at Saratoga on 27 August, 2011.
It was the same drill as they did right before the Haskell Invitational. It was Coil who started a few lengths behind his speedy stable mate, Saddleranch, who recently landed an allowance claimer here at Saratoga and destroyed his competition and won the
race by a massive margin of 4 ½ lengths.
With his exercise trainer, Shaun Bridgmohan, Coil himself showed that he can muster up some pace even starting a few lengths behind a recognized speedy colt. They went the opening quarter in a fast 22 3/5 seconds and after that Coil caught up with Saddleranch
and hit the wire ahead of him.
The 3-year-old Point Given colt was recorded the fastest among 15 other workouts that were placed on 10 August at Saratoga, he further galloped five furlongs which he completed in 59 seconds over a fast track.
Bob Baffert admitted after the work out that the Saratoga main track was pretty fast on the morning of 10 August, as his colt didn’t look as if he was going that fast, but in the end he did it easy. The trainer expected a little more than before and wanted
him to go about 48 seconds.
He revealed that the Haskell Invitational winner, Coil still loses his focus when he enters the stretch and goes a little green, but he said that we are teaching him that to go even faster when it is required and maintain the momentum till the end he hit
the wire.
The 3-year-old speedy colt is the son of the champion horse himself Point Given, out of Eversmile by Theatrical. Bred in Florida by the Glen Hill Farm, Coil is trained by Bob Baffert for owners Karl Watson, Paul Weitman, Michael Pegram.
Coil has gone on to win three races from the four starts he had in his young career. Prior to the Haskell Invitational, Coil represented Bob Baffert in the two other graded stakes races.
The Grade 3 Affirmed that the colt went on to win under M Garcia, over at a distance of 1 1/16 miles at Hollywood Park, and the next was the Grade 2 Swaps Stakes, which he nearly lost to Dreamy Kid also at Hollywood Park.
