I want to start cherrypicking at coin shows. What's the best way to get started? Also, what are the most common things to look for?

  1. To Cherry Pick you need to know what varieties are out there that are rare or scarce. So the 2 books on cherry picking come into play. There is no way you can remember all the types so you need to pick a couple of series you like. You need to read up on coins. No one here can give you a fast way, you have to do the work yourself. Most series of coins has a book that lists all the die marriages of that series and some are down right rare. The books are not cheap so you need to pick a series. The Cherry Pickers guides don't have all the die marriages but does have most of the scarce ones. good luck.

  2. It really depends on what you are interested in starting to collect.  I've found that Indian Head pennies are the easiest and although some may cost you more than others, alot of people like them so even if you get doubles, you can trade/sell them easier than alot of other things.  Condition is a huge thing.  Get yourself a Red Book and make it your bible.  A new one just came out for this year and subscribing to it would be hugely beneficial.  It tells you about conditions as well as price ranges to look at.
