Colby Rasmus sparks as St. Louis Cardinals defeat Baltimore Orioles 5-1 – MLB Update
St. Louis Cardinals’ out-fielder, Colby Rasmus and starter Chris Carpenter both were outstanding as Rasmus hit two RBIs and Carpenter had five strike-outs in the Cardinals’ 5-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles at Oriole Park, Baltimore on June 29.
With this valuable win, the Cardinals won the three-game series 2-0 after losing the last series against Toronto Blue Jays.
In the first inning, the batters missed the scoring opportunities and got out as the Cardinals’ out-fielder, Jon Jay was struck-out swinging and Matt Holliday flied out to centre-field. The Orioles’ batters also followed the same track as J.J. Hardy got
out towards right-field and Nick Markakis lined out off left-field.
The Cardinals took two runs during the second inning and led off 2-0. Rasmus struck a solo homer (409 feet) to right-field and Lance Berkman posted his first run. At the top of the third inning, the Cardinals’ batters added another two runs to mount their
lead. Nick Punto scored a single run when Skip Schumaker drove towards deep right-field.
The second run for the Cardinals was taken by Schumaker when Berkman hit a sacrifice fly off centre-field. On the other hand, Hardy scored the first run for the Orioles when Markakis doubled to deep centre-field and the score-board advanced to 4-1.
The pitchers did not allow any batter to take a run in the fourth inning. Carpenter gave away just one run on seven hits with one earned run in his nine innings pitched. He allowed only one walk on 132 pitches. Carpenter commented on his feelings and said,
“Dunc asked me after the sixth, after the seventh, after the eighth. To be honest with you, I felt just as good at the end of the game as I did at the beginning."
The Orioles’ catcher, Matt Wieters praised Carpenter in his statement and said, “He's a big horse. He was able to locate on both sides of the plate. He used his cutter, used his sinker, got a good curveball. We got him up to 132 pitches but couldn't get
him out of the game.”
During the fifth inning, Schumaker contributed the final run of the game to move the score-board 5-1 when David Freese singled to centre-field and Berkman occupied second base at the end of fifth inning. In the last four innings, the batters failed to score
a run.
