I have been getting cold sores and i dont know how im getting them. i have started dating a guy and it seems like i get the cold sores a few days after i kiss him. he told me that he used 2 be a player and has slept with about 50 women so i made him get an std test we havent done anything but kiss so if he has herpes could i get that from kissing him? but i have never seen him have a cold sore. he told me he had an std test after every girl he has been with and it has always come back clean. i made him get another test anyway and he said they only call if something bad comes up he had the test awhile ago but he hasnt said anything about it. i dont know if it could be from stress either. im under extreme stress from wondering about school and trying to find a job i dont know if that would cause it. i had shingles 2 years ago so maybe that could have something to do with it. thank you everyone for your help!

  1. Once you have the virus, you have it.  So it's not like you are catching the cold sore from your boyfriend over and over again.  You are just having outbreaks.  So I would think that it is stress related, although a number of factors can trigger an outbreak.  Try to relax and also, drinking more water and keeping your system cleaned out and healthy can also help you, as well as staying out of the sun.  Good luck!

  2. You are getting cold sores because you have the cold sore virus.  Once  you have the virus, you have it forever.  Many of us already have the cold sore virus dormant in our bodies, and never have a flare up of cold sores.  We contracted it as children, as it is a very common virus, and children pick it up easily as they often share food and drinks, and may be less concerned about hand washing and hygiene.   Cold sores can be transmitted even when the person does not have a cold sore, though it is less likely to happen then.

There is no over-the-counter medication or home remedy that cures cold sores.  Only time will take care of that.  But there is a good prescription medication for cold sores.  It will make them go away much faster, and as a result of taking this medication you will have far fewer outbreaks of cold sores.

The absolute best treatment for cold sores is a prescription medication in pill form called Valtrex.  It was intended for genital herpes, but cold sores are caused by the same family of viruses, and Valtrex stops colds sores in their tracks.  None of the other treatments come close to the effectiveness of Valtrex, not the ointment Zovirax, and certainly not Abreva or anything else.  Ask your doctor about it to see if you would be a good candidate for this medication.  My doctor prescribed it for me for cold sores about five years ago and after taking it only a couple of times I hardly ever get a cold sore any more, and before Valtrex I was having several attacks a year.  On the rare occasions that I do get one now, it is gone almost immediately when I take the medication - in about a day.    In the meantime, here are a couple of informative links.

  3. if you had shingles, then you have the herpes virus in your nervous system...most of us got it when we had chicken pox as kids, and it lays dormant in the nerves until something triggers it.  No, you didn't get it from him, you already had it.  And yes, stress can trigger them.

If they are large or painful, ask your doctor about valtrex.
