Cole Cragin wins Men’s 100yard backstroke heats: Day two – NCAA Division 1 Championship Meet
Cole Cragin of Texas won the qualification rounds of Men’s 100yard backstroke on second day of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division 1 Championship Meet at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Seattle, Wash on Friday, March
23.
Cragin smothered efforts of his opponents by clinching top position in the short course 100yard discipline. With his immaculate efforts, he remained one stroke ahead of his following swimmer, Kyle Owens of Auburn, and surfaced on the finishing end with the
timing of 45.95 seconds.
His strongest challenger, Owens stayed just 0.07 seconds slower from him and transpired on the finishing blockade with the timing of 46.02 seconds. Owens was trailed by Mitchell Friedemann of Arizona, who remained just 0.03 seconds behind his foregoing competitor
and concluded his race with the timing of 46.05 seconds for third position.
Friedemann was followed by David Nolan of Stanford, who was 0.16 seconds apart and earned his way into the final round as fourth fastest swimmer by touching the wall with the timing of 46.21 seconds.
Kip Darmody of Texas emerged as the fifth best qualifying swimmer of the discipline as he was just 0.07 seconds slower and ended his swim in a time of 46.28 seconds.
Next was the Men’s 800yard freestyle relay, where relay team of Texas occupied gold medal of the discipline by clocking a time of 6 minutes and 15.55 seconds. They were followed by relay squad of California, which stayed just 0.15 seconds behind and hit
the finishing end with the timing of 6 minutes and 15.70 seconds for silver medal.
Subsequently, Stanford’s relay team stayed almost four seconds slower from the silver medallist and stepped on the victory stand for bronze medal by hitting the wall with the timing of 6 minutes and 19.19 seconds. Virginia’s squad finished fourth in the
distant relay discipline as they settled on the finishing blockade by posting 6 minutes and 20.97 seconds.
Cragin was delighted with his fastest qualification effort and state that he will try to excel in the playoff to secure top spot on the victory stand for gold medal.
