Cole Hamels’ pitching helps Philadelphia Phillies defeat San Diego Padres 3-1 – MLB Update
Philadelphia Phillies’ starter, Cole Hamels was impressive with his pitching as he gave just one walk and struck-out 10 batters in the Phillies’ 3-1 win against the San Diego Padres at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia on July 22.
Chris Denorfia was struck-out looking, Jason Bartlett grounded out to third base and Chase Headley struck-out looking at the top of the first inning. Similarly, the Phillies’ short-stop Jimmy Rollins flied out to centre-field, Chase Utley popped out to short-stop
position and Ryan Howard struck-out swinging at the bottom of the first inning.
The Phillies scored their first run during the second inning to get a 1-0 lead. Carlos Ruiz was saved at second base on the error of the Padres’ centre-fielder Cameron Maybin while Shane Victorino posted a single run. In the third inning, the batters were
grounded out and struck-out on the fastballs of the pitchers.
During the fourth inning, the Phillies’ batters added two runs to their score-card to take it 3-0. Victorino posted one run while Ruiz moved to second base on a wild pitch of the Padres’ starter, Cory Luebke. The second run was taken by Ruiz when John Mayberry
Jr. drove a double-run shot to left-field.
On the other hand, the Padres opened their scoring account with a single run to reduce their lead 3-1. Alberto Gonzalez was grounded out to third base and Maybin contributed the first and last run for the Padres.
Hamels said, “You hydrate enough and convince yourself you have to go out there and make pitches no matter what. If your body is prepared for it, you can do it. There's a lot worse things people have to go through than playing baseball in 110 degrees.”
The Padres’ manager, Bud Black commented on Hamels and said, “I've seen him develop into a pitcher who can do a lot of things. His movement on his fastball and his command of his pitches have really improved. He's showing that being an All-Star is warranted.”
In the last four innings, the batters missed the scoring opportunities and got out to various field positions. Hamels pitched eight innings and permitted only one run on three hits with an ERA of 2.62. He gave up just one earned run on his 100 pitches.
The Phillies led off the four-game series 1-0 against the Padres at Philadelphia.
