Cole Hamels shines as Philadelphia Phillies beat Colorado Rockies, 2-1 – MLB Update
Philadelphia Phillies’ starter, Cole Hamels had an outstanding day as he pitched eight solid innings and struck out eight batters in the Phillies, 2-1 victory over the Colorado Rockies at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, on May 18.
Hamels allowed just one run on five hits including one earned run and one walk. He pitched with an ERA of 2.92. Hamels expressed his excitement as, “We got a bunt, a sacrifice. It's good to see us doing that. That's baseball.”
The pitchers threw the ball in good line and stopped the hammerings of batters from both sides. The Phillies were on top from the start as they restricted the run-scoring attempts of the Rockies. Alfredo Amezaga was about to complete a run from first to
third base but John Mayberry Jr. threw him out in the first inning. Carlos Ruiz also shined as he tacked Ryan Spilborghs to end the second inning.
No score was added in the first four innings and the score-card remained empty. The Phillies’ Manager Charlie Manuel had a huge ovation for Hamels. Speaking to reporters, he said, “I'm concerned about it. But with the pitching we have, we'll keep chipping
away and we're going to improve our offense. We're gonna get it done.”
In the fifth inning, Wilson Valdez singled off the left-field spot and Raul Ibanez posted a single run to give the Phillies an initial 1-0 lead. The sixth inning again passed away without any score. The game was tied at 1-all when Todd Helton drove a shot
towards the left-field and Carlos Gonzalez scored a single run.
Jimmy Rollins gave the Phillies a momentum when he hit a sacrifice fly off the right-field and Valdez posted a single run to go-ahead his team with 2-1. The ninth inning went score-less for both sides. Valdez said of the game, “We have to fight no matter
who we are missing. We have to play the game and score runs.”
The Rockies’ starter Jorge De La Rosa was shaky with the ball as he threw eight innings with an ERA of 3.34 and gave away two runs on five hits with one earned run. He was able to strike out four batters.
