Cole Hamels should win Cy Young Award in his first season after contract extension-MLB Part 1
Starting pitcher for Philadelphia Phillies, Cole Hamels must remove the tag on him that the Cy Young glory is not made for him. He has been so successful over the years.
Yet, the very distinction, which stays with the pitcher throughout his life, is not bagged by him.
Though that does not mean he lacks the credentials for winning it, just a misleading impression goes into the minds of those, who follow the game superficially if it is not earned. Just to make sure the devil has gained his due, winning Cy Young Award is
necessary for Hamels.
Otherwise, he may end up leaving the Major League Baseball without achieving something, which has to become the reason of why he will be discussed for many years to come.
Even if he contributes massively toward wins in the important games, just as he did back in 2008 and helped the Phillies claim the World Series honour, his impact on the minds of the fans is more likely to diminish as soon as he departs the MLB.
What makes it even more important for him to reach this landmark now is the expensive contract extension that he received from the Phillies during the last season. The club thrust confidence in him, placing a mammoth $144 million in his hands.
"I wanted to give the Phillies every opportunity," Hamels said. "It's very hard to leave a place that you've had so many great memories. You don't want to miss it and not be a part of it. I know the organization has always done a good job of going out to
win. We have great players here. You don't want to have to leave that or stray away and see them win and you're not part of it.”
There can be no other time better than the one that is coming ahead to reward the faith of the organisation for Hamels.
For example, with his club on the brink of losing its pride in the National League East Division permanently, he can step up to reverse the fate of the organisation.
Off-course, he cannot ensure everything alone but certainly the responsibility on his shoulders is heavy.
Hamels must go into the next season with the mindset of winning every game.
Regardless of the run-support from the offence, his job should be to make it nearly impossible for the oppositions to score runs against him in every match.
The reason why he can be relied upon for doing this job is because he is capable of accomplishing it. He has all what a hurler requires to make the batters feel as if hitting and scoring runs is impossible until he is on the mound.
He has the credentials to attain a psychological advantage against the batters and use it to exploit their weaknesses.
