Has anybody taken this out into the ocean? How does it perform and is it safe? First hand experience? Would you recommend any other types of inflatable kayaks that are safe to paddle around on the ocean? Thanks for your time.

  1. No no no no.... Coleman makes those boats for floating lazily in the local pond or lake.  If you want to go ocean kayaking, definitely get a boat made for the purpose.   Definitely not safe.

    If this:

is the boat you're talking about, you should read Coleman's description of their inflatables line, of which this boat is a part:

"The Coleman® line has grown to include water recreational items that can be used at the pool, beach or lake. "

No mention of oceans, or even rivers for that matter.  The material used to construct their inflatables is just not made for the abuse of the ocean.  And, it's also not constructed for anyone to seriously use it more than a few times a year.  If you're serious enough about kayaking that you want to aquire ocean paddling skills, you need to be serious about your boat.  Seriously.  ;)

  2. Aire or NRS.... I have paddled an AIRE Lynx on the ocean and have plenty of river time on IK's. [AIRE Tomcats].

Due to my experience with [Post 80's] Coleman products I could not recommend anything they make.

    Good luck!!
