Colin Calderwood named as Hibernian boss
Hibernian have announced the appointment of Colin Calderwood as their new manager on a three-year deal.
The 45-year-old had been acting as assistant boss at English Premier League club Newcastle United. He is the former boss of Northampton Town and Nottingham Forest, with whom he was lauded for introducing an attractive, attacking brand of football.
Though the Scot was enjoying his stint at Newcastle, where he helped them gain promotion from the Football League Championship, the chance to manage a Scottish Premier League club was too tempting.
He told Newcastle’s official website, "The opportunity to manage a top-flight side in my home country was hard for me to turn down. And that is a challenge I'm greatly looking forward to, but Newcastle will always be a special club to me."
Replaces John Hughes
Calderwood steps into the role left by John Hughes, who left earlier this month, and has a tough task ahead if he is to turn Hibs into a side capable of challenging for honours. They are currently lying in eighth in the SPL table, already 16 points behind
leaders Celtic and Rangers. That marks a far cry from the side which were challenging at the top of the table as recently as January.
Rod Petrie, chairman of Hibs, revealed that he was happy to appoint Calderwood to the role and insisted that his new manager’s experience helped him to win the job.
"Colin has been in the dug-out as a manager in nearly 300 matches. He also has a wealth of experience as a player and as an assistant manager in the English Premier League. He is a winner, having won promotion with three different clubs. He is a leader with
real drive and determination to succeed. This makes him an outstanding choice."
