Colin Campbell steps down as NHL’s Disciplinarian due to ethical reasons prior to the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals
The National Hockey Leagues’ (NHL) veteran executive and former professional ice hockey player as well as coach, Colin Campbell, stepped down as the NHL’s Chief Disciplinarian yesterday, June 1st, due to ethical reasons regarding his son’s participation
in the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals.
Campbell is also the Senior Vice President of NHL along with its Director of Hockey Operations.
He has only relinquished his extra charge as a disciplinarian because of his son, Gregory Campbell, currently playing as Boston Bruins’ left wing forward.
"Greg and his father, it seems like they separate their personal and business relationship very well", Bruins’ forward, Daniel Paille, said. "We see it amongst ourselves, and I don't think it will change anything for Greg".
The change has been in speculations since March between the NHL Commissioner, Gary Bettman, and Campbell.
The former disciplinarian also added that it had nothing to do with his son playing with the Eastern Conference champions. Most people think otherwise since there were widespread rumours regarding Boston being influenced due to Campbell’s son playing in
the team.
"It's part of the game, and he's just having fun playing now", Colin Campbell said. "There's taunts in all aspects of the game. There's no boundaries down there, but its all part of the game and trying to win".
During the first game of the Stanley Cup Final series, Campbell had requested to be excused from making any decisions needed in the match, after which he decided to let go of the post.
Campbell has been working for the league since 1998 and prior to that he had been coaching New York Rangers for over four seasons.
It has been decided that he will continue to work for the league since he is now working according to his needs and wants.
The only thing Campbell will not be doing any more is handling the suspension and fines, players and management personnel from various teams are issued after official notifications.
Boston is entering its first playoff final in over 20 years and Campbell does not want to be an obstacle in the way of any team.
