Colin Edwards lifts the tag of captain for the third year
Colin Edwards, the former captain of the European Championship and the Home Internationals has been appointed as the national captain for 2011.
The news was disclosed at a press conference by the 47 year old from Bath. While speaking to the press Edwards said, “I am delighted and thrilled to be leading England again. We have enjoyed a great couple of years of success and hopefully that will continue.
I have really enjoyed it and I also enjoy working with the coaches and the officials”.
This would be the third time Edward will lead the team. The tenure of his captaincy started in December 2008, but with the end of the first year, Edward had his tenure extended for one more year. The process was repeated again by the end of 2009 and today,
Edward will successfully lead his team for a third consecutive year.
During this period, Edward and his team defeated Spain in 2009 and won the Home internationals. Moreover, they secured the second place in the European Men's Team Championships against Scotland in the same year.
However, in 2010, he repeated the successful year and re-crowned his team at the Home Internationals in Wales, but could not defeat France in the European Championship.
Once again, the captain is looking forward for a striking victory, despite having a slight change in the team. Couple of players left the team as they turned professional, but that does not disturb the captain.
Commenting on the new layup Edwards said, "Winning the European title was the highlight of my career, but it was also extremely satisfying to win the Home Internationals as well. I am excited about the coming season as we have the nucleus of last year's
squad. We have lost a few players who have turned professional, but we should have a strong six-man team for the Europeans so I'm very optimistic".
Edward has played in 86 matches for his country in 1991- 2003, out of which he won 47 events. Moreover, he holds the honour of representing Europe in the Bonallack Trophy in 1999 as well.
Colin Edwards has been reappointed as the captain and hence his first task after taking the oath will be to channel England to a triumph against Spain at the Berkshire and defend against Portugal at the Home Internationals.
Consistency in leadership is an essential element for success of a certain team. Let us see where the three-year-old captain takes the English team this year.
