Colin Montgomerie backs Lee Westwood, suggests him to play overseas to improve his game – Golf news
European Ryder Cup striker Colin Montgomerie backed Lee Westwood in his bid to win a major in the ongoing 2011 season and advised him to play offshore in order to gain the prowess as of Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods.
Montgomerie addressed the press at the launch of the Monty’s Monthly Medal charity initiative, a charity setup to help the cancer patients in Scotland. He talked about his charity work and commented on the current golf scenario in Europe.
In an answer to a question asked about Westwood’s bid to win a major title this season, Montgomerie said, “Its true Lee Westwood as number one has not won a major, but we also have a world number one in ladies' tennis as well who has not won a major.  I
almost got to number one in the world without winning a major.”
He praised Westwood for his achievements in the past two years and said that he was number one for earning the highest points in the world. He added that Westwood deserved being there, as he was consistent and his position had nothing to do with his trophy
case missing a major title.
Montgomerie also praised the American players such as Woods and Mickelson for their strategies. He said that these golfers ruled the rankings for a decade because of their versatility; they cruised all around the world and played in all the continents, which
gave them exposure and experience to tackle all sorts of courses.
He said, “Tiger has always travelled about the world and been a global player, we've seen Phil in recent years travel to European Tour events in the Far East and he was in Abu Dhabi this year which is great. They were getting more points than we were here
in Europe for a long time.”
Montgomerie praised the hard work and determination put in by the young guns of Europe in the game as well. He said that it was their flexibility in adopting new techniques and strategies, which led them to the top of the world.
Six of world’s top ten golfers are Europeans. The list includes Lee Westwood (1), Martin Kaymer (2), Luke Donald (3), Graeme McDowell (5), Rory McIlroy (6) and Paul Casey (7).
