Colin Montgomerie excited as 2010 Ryder Cup week begins
Colin Montgomerie is counting days ever since the 2010 Ryder Cup week arrived and seems eager for the action to start at Celtic Manor. In the meantime, he was found telling the media that he is ready to enjoy "five hours of freedom" on Tuesday
as the final preparations for the 2010 Ryder Cup formally start from Wednesday morning.
The 12-man teams each from Europe and United States had earlier assembled at the Twenty-ten course on Monday but today they reached the venue for their first practice sessions. These sessions are a sigh of relief for both the captains as they have been preparing
for this mega event for the last two years. This would be the 38th edition of the biennial contest which is being hosted by Wales for the first time. Moreover, the European side seems more eager to regain the trophy which they lost at Valhalla last
time.
While briefing the media at a press conference, Colin said that he was looking forward to have his five hours of freedom on Tuesday. He added that he still remembers the time when he and Pavin were announced as the captains for the Ryder Cup teams. "Then,
the journey seemed long” as quoted by Colin, “my god it was”. Colin maintained that the excitement and anticipation regarding the 2010 Ryder Cup is growing on hourly basis now and it has made the time run even slower.
The European team is already bookmaker’s all time favorite and they are predicting it to record its fourth successive victory on the home soil. However, according to Montgomerie, he is expecting a tough contest as he believes that his team is favorite only
on paper while in reality Ryder Cup isn’t played on paper.
Golf experts predict that the matches will be closely contested. Earlier also, before the European victory in Detroit in 2004, 11 matches were dragged to the last hole out of which seven were won by the Europeans. This portrays that despite the home soil
advantage, the match is decided by the game not by the fans.
Discussing the motivation and zeal of his players, Colin believes that his side does not lack in any of these aspects because if they did they wouldn't have been at the Celtic Manor. He accepted that it has been a long time for Europe to be without victory
but this served as a source of motivation for the players. In fact, his team was so excited that he actually had to tell them to control their energies.
Owing to the fact that this is the first time for Wales to host the Ryder Cup, the European team will be sharing its excitement with thousands of spectators as well. According to media reports, more than ten thousand spectators are expected at the Usk Valley
during the week. Moreover, the captain has urged the supporters to remain calm although he realizes that this appeal is not necessary as most of the spectators will be golf club members. Therefore, they know the etiquettes of the game.
This is it for the press conference that took place at Celtic Manor on Monday. In it the captain of the European side has discussed his issues of motivations and excitement with the arrival of the final week. Monty is right about the expectations that are
mounting up owing to the increasing pressure. Still, it would be the time, the weather and preparations of the American team that will decide whether Colin lifts the trophy on Sunday or not.
