Colin Montgomerie fails to qualify for the US Open this year
The veteran Scottish golfer Colin Montgomerie failed to qualify for the US Open after he recorded 68 and 72 in the US Open Final Qualifier at the Walton Heath in Surrey.
He was just two strokes behind the qualifying score along with another veteran player, Jose Maria Olazabal, the current Ryder Cup captain. Olazabal was three strokes behind the qualifying line after recording 67 and 74 in two rounds.
Last year, Montgomerie missed the chance of playing a major championship for the first time since 1989. This year has witnessed him miss a major for the second time.
He is now really disappointed with his performance in the past few days. He appeared in the qualifying event after he recorded a disgraceful 86 in the final round of the BMW PGA Championship last week.
According to him, he went back home in Perthshire after the BMW Championship to fetch his putter, which he thought might solve his problem in the qualifier.
However, it did not happen and he now has to remain a spectator for this year’s second major event of the year.
"Who in their right mind would do that? But yes, I did," Montgomerie admitted while talking about his 900-mile drive back to home. "It's just a shame - I played really well this morning and gave myself a chance".
The major cause of his disappointment was that his pitch to the 17th hole bounced back after hitting the flag stick to go 15 feet away causing him two putts in the end.
In addition to that, the ball lipped out of the hole when he tried to make the putt from almost the same distance as it was on the 17th.
In the meantime, Alexander Noren and Marc Warren both recorded a nine-under par score each to share the lead and booked their place in the US open this year.
"I wasn't even sure whether I was going to play today," said the 31-year-old Warren, "but the people around me told me to give it a rip and see what happened".
Warren will be making his first trip to the US Open after making 10 attempts at the qualifying tournament.
