Colin Montgomerie hints at Ryder Cup return
There will be a new captain for the European Ryder Cup Team in 2014. Many names have come up but probably the leading candidate is Colin Montgomerie. Former world number two captained the 2010 European team to glory in the Ryder Cup but he immediately stepped
down.
With the 2014 Ryder Cup being played in his home town, Colin has hinted once again that he might accept the captaincy provided the European Tour should approach him.
This is a very clever move by the Scottish as he has hinted at attaining role while maintaining his modesty. “If the European Tour wants me to be captain I will be,” Montgomerie said. “The players’ committee will decide”.
Colin is an experienced player and a previous captain. It would be a pretty tough task to reject a man of such calibre. His 2010 Ryder Cup success will force the authorities to consider him for the post.
Montgomerie would love to write his name in history books, along the likes of Tony Jacklin and Bernard Gallacher who have led the European team on multiple occasions.
There are other names for the spot as well but considering the experience and the fact that the tournament will take place in Gleneagles, Colin’s hometown, he is probably the best choice for 2014.
Colin has been very diplomatic with his statements.
"I will do anything I can to help the European team. The Ryder Cup has been part of my life since 1991," he said. "If the European Tour wants me to be captain, I will be. The players' committee will decide. I was on the last one so I know how it works".
There was some misunderstanding regarding the rules for being a Ryder Cup captain. Things, however, changed considerably but as far as the rules are concerned they have not changed.
Many people had argued that according to new rules Colin cannot be the captain. "If you go back to the days of Jacklin and Gallacher, yes, there is an opportunity to do it again," said Montgomerie. "And I do not think the rules have changed".
