Colin Montgomerie not to interfere in Olazabal’s matters
Colin Montgomerie has vowed that he would like stay out of Jose Maria Olazabal’s way till the Ryder Cup. Colin will be at Medinah Country Club when the showdown takes place but he has clearly stated that he will not be interfering in Olazabal’s matters with
regards to anything.
Montgomerie was talking to the European journalist, Bernie McGuire, when he disclosed that Jose Maria Olazabal has invited him to three private functions but he has declined the invitation.
The European Ryder Cup captain invited the veteran to the Opening Ceremony, Gala Dinner, and Closing Ceremony but the Scott declined every time, citing various reasons.
“I have been invited to all three events, but then I am commentating for Sky (Sports) on the Opening Ceremony, so I can’t be in two places at one time,” Montgomerie said, according to the report.
“I am afraid I will leave the Gala Dinner to the teams as I do not want to be part of that. Again, the Closing Ceremony I will be commentating, so I have politely declined all three”.
Colin feels that it is not the time for ex Captains to step in. In fact, it is the time for Olazabal and Love to show what they are made off. Therefore, he will be leaving things on their shoulders.
“That’s not my role, and I don’t want to get in the way of Ollie as it’s his week, as it is for Davis (Love III). So it’s not a week for former captains”.
It is reported that only three players of the European Ryder Cup team will be accompanying Olazabal to America. Most of the Europeans also play on the PGA tour, so they will be there already.
Rory McIlroy is busy in the playoffs currently and his performance at the Ryder Cup will be a major deciding factor.
Colin, however, on numerous occasions has expressed his desire to captain the European Ryder Cup team in 2014. However, at the moment, he will be leaving things on Olazabal’s shoulders.
Colin is currently suffering from a calf injury and, as a result, he has withdrawn from the upcoming BMW Italian Open.
