Colin Montgomerie picks Tiger Woods as the possible winner of the 2012 Masters
Colin Montgomerie has picked Tiger Woods as the possible winner of the upcoming Masters Tournament by declaring him the best player in the field.
There are several more competent players in the field of the major tournament in April at Augusta, but Woods is the favourite on Montgomerie’s list.
The European Team Capitan of the 2010 Ryder Cup shared his views and said that Woods is in his full form.
He is delivering his best on every course and will win the first major tournament of the current season.
The 36-year-old American player’s performance at the Honda Classic was praised by many professionals.
He also delighted Montgomerie and impressed him to speak in favour of the former no. 1 American golfer.
After finishing three rounds by displaying an average performance, Woods scored six amazing birdies and two massive eagles in the final round of the tournament in Florida.
His leading scores of 62 were appreciated by Montgomerie and he declared Woods the winner for such enormous scoring performance at PGA National Champion Course, Palm Beach Gardens.
"You get Woods scoring 62 in the last round and you still win - that's a very good effort, isn't it? The best of luck to him," Montgomerie said.
Woods finished the tournament on the second position and scored a 10-under 270. He was only two strokes behind the leader Rory McIlroy.
The 22-year-old Northern Irish professional is now the current no. 1 golfer at the Official World Golf Rankings. He claimed the top position from Luke Donald by winning the Honda Classic title.
He is also the biggest contender of the Master title and Woods' rival as well. However, Montgomerie favoured Woods over McIlroy at the Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia.
"I thought it would be a lot longer than it was, but it didn't even take another major," Montgomerie said.
He continued, "Two years ago Tiger probably would have snatched it after coming up in the rear-view mirror, but all credit to Rory for being stronger and more mature".
Montgomerie also spoke about the McIlroy’s current leading position and showed less interest for the young Irish star.
He stated, "He could be number one for a while, but you've got also Luke and Lee (Westwood) and Woods is as determined as h**l. He doesn't like being outside the top 10".
The field is not yet finalised for the Masters, but top-50 golfers are set to go. The 2012 episode of the major event at Augusta will be the most entertaining tournament of the year.
