Colin Montgomerie posts another disappointing finish at IFQ for The Open Championship
England’s top most seasoned golfer, Colin Montgomerie is perhaps done with his fight for a major title as the 47-year-old former Ryder Cup captain finished at the bottom of the International Final Qualifier (IFQ) at Sunningdale on Monday.
The season has turned out to be the worst in his overall career and he was coming out from a disaster in Saab Wales Open where he failed to make the cut with his second round score of 15-over par, his worst performance on the European soil.
After his sad exit from the Saab Wales Open, ironically staged at the same Celtic Manor Resort where his team won a thrilling Ryder Cup last year, Montgomerie was dejected and sad with his poor form. His words gave an indication that the former champion
has finally lost the spirit to forge ahead.
"I'm very tired, mentally more than physically." Montgomerie said after his bid for the Wales Open was over. "I started bogey, bogey, bogey and could have gone home. I'll waste my time tomorrow - and then go home."
Montgomerie has finished runner-up a staggering five times in the majors and never went over to win any single one. He is often regarded as the most unfortunate of English golfers, who did so much for the promotion of European golf but was never able to
bag a major victory. But perhaps this has been the case with many of the English golfers, including the current number one Luke Donald and the former world number one Lee Westwood.
Turning professional in 1988, Montgomerie won 40 professional tournaments, 31 of them coming on the European tour. He has never missed the Open since 1990 and is still hoping for a miracle which can possibly get him through.
"It's disappointing, so I'll go to Italy and try again," said a dejected Montgomerie."I will be trying everything - as always."
But all is not lost. A top five finish in the tournaments ahead including the Scottish Open and the Italian Open, Montgomerie might just be able to squeeze into the field at the Open. He also has a chance to make it through if he is able to move up in top
three on the money list.
