Colin Montgomerie predicts Europeans will dominate golf
Victorious Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie has predicted that European golfers will dominate the sport in the years to come.
He told reporters, "We have had a fantastic year in Europe. There is a dominance and there is a changing of the guard over to Europe. We have always bowed to America's dominance — but now we don't just have Lee Westwood, but also Martin Kaymer coming up
as well."
The Scot revealed his belief after Kaymer emerged as the winner of the Dunhill Links Championship and moved to fourth in the rankings. The German also won his maiden major, the US PGA title, in August.
The 25-year-old is not the only European player who is currently excelling. There are six players from Europe in the top ten, including Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell, who won the US Open this year, and Westwood, who is on the verge of displacing Tiger
Woods as the world's number one.
Westwood could become world number one
Englishman Westwood could have moved to the top spot last weekend if he had finished in the first two at the Dunhill Links, but he suffered from the recurrence of a long-standing calf injury. He is unlikely to play again before the WGC-HSBC Champions event
in Shanghai on November 4.
However, he is still likely to move up to the top of the rankings at the end of this month, even if he doesn’t play, due to the way the rankings are determined by points accumulated over two years.
Montgomerie added that, "I think Lee will be number one even if he doesn't play. If Tiger does not change his schedule, he will lose his number one spot, it is just the way the world rankings work."
Meanwhile, Montgomerie made a return to playing at the Dunhill Links after his stint as Europe’s Ryder Cup captain, and said that he wants to win another European Tour event.
"I haven't had a top 10 now for two years and it has to be said that it is because the Ryder Cup captaincy has taken up all my time and effort. I really want to get back to trying to win and it will be great if I can do that."
