Colin Montgomerie proposes Darren Clarke and Paul McGinley as future European Ryder Cup team captains
Colin Montgomerie has proposed the idea to name Darren Clarke and Paul McGinley as the next two European Ryder Cup team captains.
Montgomerie, along with 14 other members, is a part of the committee, which will decide Jose Maria Olazbal’s successor for the 2014 edition of the biennial event.
Clarke and McGinley are the two favourites to become the next European team captain. However, it is difficult to predict that who will take the charge in the next encounter against the United States team.
The 2014 edition of the tournament will be staged at The PGA Centenary Course at The Gleneagles Hotel, from September 26 to 28, 2012.
Talking to the media, Montgomerie admitted that it will be a difficult task to pick one of them as the next leader. However, the final decision will be made after the voting, to be held next month.
In the meantime, he also said that the committee may also consider naming the losing candidate as the captain of the 2016 Ryder Cup team.
“We will see how that voting goes,” he said. “They are quite different characters. It might well be there are two such good candidates that we might do what we did in 2004 after Bernhard Langer surrendered the captaincy and we named Ian Woosnam and Nick
Faldo for the next two http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/golf/rydercup/”.
Montgomerie proposed his idea after he was named to be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame next year. He will be added to the Hall of Fame along with the former European Tour executive director Ken Schofield.
The Scotsman is regarded as one of the best players the game of golf has ever produced. He remained European number one player for eight years, including seven years in a row.
In addition to that, he also holds a stunning track record in the Ryder Cup history, having remained unbeaten in the singles matches, in each of his eight successive appearances, starting from 1991.
In 2010, he led the European team in Celtic Manor and comfortably won the trophy for his continent. According to him, his Ryder Cup experiences were the best moments of his career.
Talking to the reporters, he expressed his pleasure in being recognised as one of the best golfers in the world. He said that he was lucky to enjoy such a successful career, which allowed him to become a part of the World Golf Hall of Fame.
“It is a wonderful surprise to hear that I will be inducted into the Hall of Fame. I know I am very fortunate to have enjoyed such a successful career playing the game I love and it makes me feel very proud that my achievements have been recognised in this
way,” he said.
