Colin Montgomerie receives the award for team of the year
First he led his team to victory and now he has picked up the Team of the Year award at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year ceremony in Birmingham.
Colin Montgomerie is the man of the hour as Lady Luck seems to be on his side ever since the historic Ryder Cup victory in Wales. The Scot was nominated for Personality of the Year, which he did not win but he certainly collected the award for the best team of the year, on behalf of his squad.
Montgomerie, who is commonly known as “Monty”, went up onto the stage in a peach colored dress shirt and a black striped tuxedo to collect the award. He uncontrollably laughed when he reached the stage and thanked the jury.
While addressing the audience, Monty said, “We were very fortunate and we had unsung heroes in our caddies and we want to thank every spectator who turned out in support of the European team in Wales. It has been a fantastic year to European golf and I'm privileged to receive this award on behalf of the European Tour”.
The European team was made from the finest professionals of the continent and this is why one h**l of entertainment was witnessed in Wales, at the course of Celtic Manor. The team won by half a point when Graeme McDowell birdied the last hole of the singles against Hunter Mahan of USA.
The Ryder Cup striker further added, "It's an honour for me to pick this up for 12 great, great men of golf. Each one of them did a great job and they can see it now, after I am holding this magnificent thing in my hand”.
Montgomerie’s effort paid off when he was awarded the Coach of the Year title, for his Ryder Cup triumph. He was competing against Blackpool manager, Ian Holloway, and England cricket coach, Andy Flower.
The forty-seven year old picked up the award on behalf of his team that played extraordinarily well in October against the American underdogs led by Corey Pavin.  The award represented a token of appreciation for the team that brought back the trophy after two years.
