Colin Montgomerie shocked at Phil Mickelson’s decision to pull out of the Scottish Open
Phil Mickelson is not playing in the Scottish Open this year. Despite his recent improvement on the links course, he has withdrawn from the event.
Mickelson used to struggle on the Links’ courses. That was also the reason behind him struggling for the race for the Claret Jug.
That being said, now he has mastered the Links course and the unpredictable weather to display even better golf.
One year ago, the 42-year-old was able to manage a tied second position at the Royal St George’s Golf Course. In the tournament, the 1st position was secured by Northern Irish professional golfer Darren Clarke.
The world number 2, Rory McIlroy had this to say about the course, “I just think Castle Stuart is so much different, with wide open fairways and big greens, that there is no comparison to Lytham”.
“I’ll just go to Lytham for a couple of days the week before to get ready,” he added.
It is still not known why the American professional golfer has snubbed the Scottish Open. It could be that he is taking some time off or wants to practice for some other tournament.
Whatever may be the case, Colin Montgomerie is very shocked at the American’s decision.
According to Montgomerie, it is essential for the Mickelson to play in the Open because his main backer, Barclays has sponsored the tournament this year.
He is also a bit confused, as the American performed well in the last year’s Scottish Open and almost won it.
Referring to the last year’s Open, Montgomerie said, “He was chasing Darren until the last few holes. You would feel competitive links practice beforehand would be beneficial to his chances at The Open”.
As Phil Mickelson has withdrawn, there is an empty space for another player in the Scottish Open. The bosses of the tournament have decided to add the 27-year-old German professional golfer, Martin Kaymer, to the list of players participating in the tournament.
Kaymer is a great addition to the Open. He has been playing Professional golf since 2005. In the year 2011, Kaymer rose to the number one spot in the world ranking.
Unfortunately for him, he occupied the position for only eight weeks and lost his position to Lee Westwood.
Nevertheless, the Scottish Open will go underway from July 12 and will entice the fans with four days of sheer entertainment.
