Colin Montgomerie turns 50 and is ready to contend on the Senior Tour – Golf News
After completing his half century last Sunday, Colin Montgomerie of Scotland is relishing the opportunity to make his debut at the Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex, slated to start from July 25, 2013.
Talking to the European Senior Tour’s official website, he expressed his pleasure in getting a chance to reunite with some of his European comrades like Bernhard Langer, Sam Torrance and Ian Woosnam, along with the defending champion
Fred Couples and the next Ryder Cup captain Tom Watson.
He also praised European Tour and R&A’s decision of moving the tournament to the links course. He holds a decent amount of experience at Royal Birdlake, as he played there in three Opens in 1991, 1998 and 2008.
“So I’ve played three Opens there, not obviously a Senior Open Championship but it’s something I am really looking forward to,” he said. “I think Rolex is a great presenting sponsor of the Senior Open, and I look forward to ...competing
from Thursday through Sunday. And not just competing, but contending. I would love to try to contend.”
He also expressed his pleasure in becoming a rookie player once again in his career, especially after spending past few years playing against some of the young players on the European Tour.
“I’ve played recently with guys who are younger than my children! You say, ‘hang on a minute, this isn’t quite a level playing field’. Suddenly I’ll be the youngest, playing against guys like Bernhard who is six years older than
me,” he added.
Montgomerie is no doubt one of the strongest additions to the tournament this year, because of his ability to play well on the links course. Also, he will definitely try to start his Senior Tour career on a high note, while competing
against some of the best senior players.
In order to watch Colin Montgomerie, Couples, Watson, Langer and many other big guns at Royal Birdlake, tickets can be purchased for just £70. This price is valid till the end of June, and it will be raised to £80 if someone plans
to buy it from the gate.
