Colin Montgomerie wants reinforced security arrangements for this year’s Ryder Cup at Medinah County
Englishman Colin Montgomerie, the non-playing European Captain of the 2010 Ryder Cup, is advocating a tighter crowd-control for the upcoming event at Medinah County in Chicago this year.
Montgomerie who successfully led the European team to a glorious victory two years ago, reminisced about the terrible crowd outburst in the final moments of the event, when Graeme McDowell went over to defeat Hunter Mahan on the 17th hole.
Montgomerie said, "The policing and marshalling throughout the week were absolutely terrific, but, like it or not, things were within a whisker of going badly wrong at the match's end”.
Montgomerie expressed these views in his latest autobiography published in the Daily Telegraph where he lamented the fact that the top-notch preparations were marred by the isolated incident at the last moment.
He added, "I am talking about the crazed goings-on that occurred on the 17th green. I think we have to learn from this and perhaps adopt more of a football-style approach, whereby stewards circle the green as the end approaches to ensure things do not spill over”.
The last episode of the biennial Ryder Cup was organised at the revered Celtic Manor Resort in Wales where Montgomerie’s team took over the American team in a nail-biting final round.
The Americans led by Corey Pavin needed Mahan to win his individual round against the freshly crowned US Open champion McDowell to land the coveted golden cup, something which never happened.
Mongomerie also recalled the moment when his wife and daughter had to grab the belt of a Policeman to forge their way out of the crowd and he was never able to shake hands with either McDowell or the American Captain Pavin.
The american team this year is being led by Davis Love III and the European side is being led by Jose Maria Olazabal.
Montgomerie, since his last battle at Celtic Manor, has slumped tremendously and has now fallen out of the top-200 on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR).
Regardless of the fact that this year’s Ryder Cup will be held on the other side of the Atlantic, Montogomerie still insists that the preparations must be spot on to avoid any untoward incident this year.
