Colin Montgomerie warns the struggling Tiger Woods is back to his former glory
One of the senior most English players Colin Montgomerie lauded Tiger Woods’ return to his once glorious form and warned that his performance at the President’s Cup last week, marks the end of a long drought the former world number one has been facing. Last
year’s Ryder Cup Captain, Montgomerie has been struggling himself for quite a while and spends most of his time as a commentator for the several events held across the globe.
“If you watched him play his singles against Aaron Baddeley, he is pretty d**n close to being back,” Montgomerie said. “He was 5 under – the best of the 24 players on show – on an impossible golf course. The determination he had was incredible – that makes
him very dangerous," he said.
Woods started off the event with a lopsided round, paired with Steve Stricker against the rampaging duo of Adam Scott and K.J Choi were given a harsh treatment and succumbed to a massive loss of 7 & 6. Citing the need for an abrupt change, Captain Fred Couples
moved in to dismantle the duo and pitched Woods alongside Dustin Johnson but the outcome was not as impressive as he would have expected from the 14-major-winner.
The International Team pair of Jason Day and Aaron Baddeley again thrashed the visitors posting a 1 up victory in the Foursomes adding to the troubles of Couples, where Woods was able to sink just one birdie the whole day. With a top-third finish on his
belt at recently held Australian Open, Woods was hoping to capitalise on the early gains but with little success.
Woods was finally able to pull in some birdies on the third day and closed the event on the fifth and final day with an overwhelming win over his nemesis Aaron Baddeley, with a comprehensive 4 & 3. He sank several birdies on one of the most difficult turfs
and walked over to throw a hug to the Captain Couples who despite of his lingering vows, never gave up on him.
Montgomerie thinks Woods will return to his fine forms right from the start of the next season but will have to work hard in case he hopes to win the Masters against his formidable foes from Europe and England.
"It will be interesting to see what happens at Augusta, where he’ll come up against the top-4 in the world in Luke Donald, Rory McIlroy, Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer.” Montgomerie added.
Woods is currently lurking at the outskirts of top-50 on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) and has fallen out of it for the first time in 15 years. He has not won a single individual title for the last two years.
The US Team won their seventh President's Cup among the nine events held so far since 1994.
