Colin Montgomerie yearns a win in the Volvo Golf Champions – Golf News
The 48-year-old Colin Montgomerie will enter the field of the Volvo Golf Champions at The Links, Fancourt, with an aim to outclass his opponents while using his new set of clubs from Callaway Golf.
“I am looking forward to trying to win," he said while talking to a press conference prior to the tournament beginning on Thursday, February 19, 2012.
"That is the goal and I have changed equipment to try to realise it. I had most of my success in the 90’s with Callaway equipment," he continued.
Moreover, he added that he won five Orders of Merit on the European Tour while using the Callaway clubs. Since he moved to other equipments, his performance was not up to the mark.
However, he has now decided to return to the old equipment. He will use the Callaway clubs as they suit him best.
He was really pleased to announce his decision to use the equipment in the Volvo Golf Champions and the tournaments to come in future.
The only problem that Montgomerie faces right now is to get the distance while hitting the drives.
He is quite concerned about his performance in the past few years, as he has not been able to make long shots on the course.
He commented, "I'm hitting the ball well, especially tee to green. The irons are good, too. I'm driving the ball safely and if I can hole the putts. I know I have to putt very, very well to compete with the longer hitters out there”.
"They have a huge advantage over me with some of the length that they hit the ball,” he said.
There will be a total of 35 players participating in the event, who have either 10 or more wins on the European Tour or have won a European Tour title in the last one year.
Moreover, the South Africans participating in the event are being considered favourite for a win in the tournament.
Therefore, it will be a great challenge for Montgomerie to emerge as the best among his rivals and register a win that he has not been able to achieve since his victory in the Smurfit Kappa European Open in 2007.
