Colin in thick soup for the Ryder Cup
The season is running towards its end but stress is building up for the European team captain who is stuck in a dilemma after Peter Hanson won the Czech open this week and shuffled the FedEx points.
The issue that needs to be addressed is the constant change that is coming in the team of 12 people as everyone wants to represent their country and hence is striving hard to make it to the qualification criteria. This behavior of the players is well depicted from Hanson’s statement after coming back from the winning field that if a player is really close to the victory then he deserves to be at Celtic Manor. The 32-year-old after winning the title pushed Miguel Angel Jimenez from the 8th spot to the 9th while Paul Casey out of the top 9s. Prior to the victory Hanson was standing at the 15th place.
The other players who are striving hard to make it to the Ryder cup team are Casey, Padraig Harrington and Jimenez. Casey and Harrington need a top-five finish, whereas Jimenez needs a top 14 to make it back to the list of top 9 players of the Ryder cup team. Moreover, one more name Luke Donald needs a victory to fall back into the place therefore; he will be seen in the Johnnie Walker Championship rather than the playoffs that are starting from tomorrow at the Ridgewood Country Club.
As mentioned above, players are striving hard to make it to the Ryder cup team therefore; in the same context Miguel Angel Jimenez who earlier had no plans to take part in the Johnnie Walker Championship but after being pushed out of top 8 he has changed his mind and decided to say goodbye to his nephew's wedding which he was suppose to attend this Saturday.
Coming back to the Captain’s headache, Justin Rose and Edoardo Molinari need a wild card pick which means chances are that they will be out of the final team and Colin Montgomerie had to deal the American team without the two players who are in the world's top 22. According to the Captain, he doesn’t know whom to accommodate and whom to discard as he feels he is in Fabio Capello’s shoes who had to leave out Theo Walcott as he needed 23 players and one had to go. He further added that if he could take all 20 players he would have been happy and much more confident.
According to the experts, it’s going to be a tough job for Colin as he cannot please everyone on the crucial Sunday night but if someone makes his way through a due way then there is no stopping. The due way here means earning a victory either at the Playoffs or attending the Johnnie Walker Championship but then also the list of contestants is huge and the events are few.
So many names are relying on Colin’s call and the winner of the Czech Open Hanson knows the fact that if he falls from the top 9 he will be out and then no wild card will be able to save him. Jimenez's late entry into the Johnnie Walker Championship was a bad news for Hanson because he is standing at the ninth place and if Jimenez finishes in the top 14, he will be replaced.
Finally the end of 2010 season is proceeding near and near and so is the Ryder Cup but to make the cut into the team, players including Paul Casey, Luke Donald and Miguel Angel Jimenez are struggling hard. Their struggle is fair but for Colin Montgomerie their striving means constant shuffling and changes in the team, which is going to meet face to face with the American team at the Celtic Manor. However, this constant turmoil will end on the Sunday night and Colin will be able to relax finally.
