sorting after collection: faster, mostly with machines, more precise (by the types of metal etc), lots more get recycled, rubbish of every household gets recycled

sorting before collection: takes 15 mins per week - would be better if everybody works that 15 mins in his/her profession (makes more even for tax), kitchen is not full of eyesoring dirty bins, garden door doesnt need to be opened to many times so heating bill is lower (fosil fuel), less fosil fuel gets consumed because fewer vehicles come to collect. what do you think?

  1. First of all it doesn't matter if you sort it or the recycling plant does.It takes the same amount of vehicles to collect it.You only have one or two(depending on the size of the route)  truck(s) that collects your recyclables and the sorting starts at the curb.They put your cardboard and paper in one part and the Glass,Tin(metals) & Plastic in another part of the truck.Then when it gets to the plant the cardboard and paper go to one station and the rest to another and then they sort it the rest of the way.So what you do at home really makes no difference.

  2. mandatory sort at home, so people will feel they contribute, and maybe think twice before throwing stuff away.

  3. Centralised sorting:

    Pros: More efficient; Provides employment;

    Cons: More costly, council tax already too high for some families and individuals, especially the elderly, (unless extra costs could be met by savings in less collections and less vehicles).

  4. Maybe we all need to open the garden door occasionally and become familiar with the outside and fresh air.  15 mins a week sorting the stuff we bought that wasn't needed (packaging mostly) and having to touch it and work out what to do with it (maybe find a reuse for it) and becoming more aware of the waste we create by our purchases... just maybe we need to become less waste-full.  We = me too.

    I too need to get outside more and buy less waste-full items.

    Walking to work this morning.  Being in the cold and having to eat more breakfast to combat the welsh hills, wasting energy or using it wisely to be with the environment more conducive to my form.
