Question:

Collecting Unemployment While in Grad School?

I am a full-time grad student in California, and right now I have a full-time job and part-time job too. The part-time job only averages about 8 hrs a week. A new contract is in effect Oct. 1 and it eliminates my full-time midnight shift job.

The only other time I was on unemployment was two years ago for about two months. The job I had prior to that time paid similar money that I'm making now, and I qualified for the max amount. So if I qualify for unemployment at all, I believe I'd qualify for max amount now, minus the 8 hours I'll still be working. This would be a lifesaver for me til something else comes up. Additionally, I have been working continuously for more than the last two years. I just mention that to help you assess my chances.

So now my situation will be that I only am working only about 8 hrs a week, and in grad school full time as my full-time job ends. Will being in school disqualify me for California unemployment?

I know that the website says you must be able to work. I am able, and am fully willing to work just as I've been working this whole time, though my school schedule demands that it be some job with weird hours. Would that further make it less likely that I can collect?

I hope I didn't leave out anything necessary to comment. Please let me know if you think I'll qualify. Have you been in a similar situation?

Thanks!

  1. In some states, being a full time student will preclude you from receiving benefits.  However, in California, the rules are a bit different.  Check out this link, and then apply your situation to the rules and examples given.
