Collective Bargaining Agreement impact on Chicago White Sox – Part 2
Implementing a new age limit when drafting amateurs from colleges and schools, the new CBA has proposed and will put into practice the 21 years compulsory age for new young prospects in Major League Baseball in the next season.
One particular fact on which the MLB commissioner Bud Selig is certainly irritated is the extraordinary spending of franchises on their new drafts. The teams involved in any kind of extra spending during the next season on amateur draft will not only face
penalties but also have to show the definitive reason why they did it despite the MLB’s ruling.
However, the 2011 stats show that about seven teams went too high with approximately $10 million on their draft spending including the Pittsburgh Pirates $17.01 million, Washington Nationals $15 million, Kansas City Royals $14.01 million, Chicago Cubs $11.95
million, Arizona Diamondbacks $11.93 million, Tampa Bay Rays $11.48 million, Seattle Mariners $11.33 million, San Diego Padres $11.02 million, Toronto Blue Jays $11 million and Boston Red Sox $10.98 million.
The new CBA has proposed putting a restriction on each team’s total spending in the first 10 rounds of any given draft. Though all the details are clearly mentioned in the CBA in the further clauses under the Daft heading but still many will find it difficult
to understand.
The new draft window will now be more significant to show all new conditions that will likely ban any extra spending. Another point which is important to discuss here, that if any team does not respect the given limit of spending by the MLB, the excess money
will go to draft pool while a particular franchise’s signing pool is equal to the total sum of the value of that particular team’s signings in the very first 10 rounds of the draft.
Meanwhile, coming onto the impact on how the Chicago White Sox will react to the new rules, the management has already commented in the media as they will not be spending much in the coming draft or might not trade any player in the near future. However,
acquiring new players and trade has nothing to do with new CBA ruling on the Amateur draft, but still it will help the franchise to grow in the right direction.
Some baseball experts have even stated that the new CBA rules over draft picks will eventually help the White Sox on a broader sense. Firstly, it will give the White Sox management extra cash in hand and secondly they can spent this extra money to purchase
experienced players from the league instead on younger players who needed some time on the field to understand the game plan of any particular team.
Apart from the White Sox who will benefit from this rule, many teams will suffer especially those teams who have smaller financial markets. This is also a critical point as whenever any team spends extra money on drafts, back of the mind, they knew that
their drafts will be playing after two to three years while in between those years they usually make different plans for those drafts according to their style of play. Now the timing will play a huge part from any player from being drafted to his Major League
debut.
