Collective Bargaining Agreement impact on Chicago White Sox – Part 3
In the Major League Baseball’s new CBA, a term called “competitive balance lottery” which will be awarded to the lowest revenue earning franchises in order to compensate and show competiveness in the league.
These low revenue generating teams will be given an extra draft pick including the White Sox for an additional pick from the MLB Draft. Last week, during the GM’s meeting some of the executives from the White Sox management did state in the media that this
new rule will certainly enhance the club’s chances to pick an extra player who might prove beneficial for them in the future. The White Sox, on the other hand will also possess the right to trade that extra pick for cash and involve in a trade to enhance the
current roster’s strength.
However, talking about new CBA and comparing it with the old one, a clear and relatively good change is of draft signing dates, which are moved from August 15 to between July 12 and 18 can benefit the teams in huge way. This will help the league’s players
in plenty of ways. The new drafted players will get the chance to play in the minor league affiliates as well and international players can also join the Major League after playing in their respective leagues.
Many international leagues start when the current Major League signings window opens but as the new dates have set by the MLB these players can also look forward to play in Major League Baseball.
For the White Sox, this new CBA and new dates will bring certainly a positive change. Part of the reason that the White Sox management has yet to look and officially pass the CBA, many executives think that this is the best agreement MLB can offer at the
moment.
Commissioner Bud Selig and his contemporaries in the league also know that the new CBA has a very good chance to be accepted by all the players including all the franchises with high regard unlikely the way of the National Basketball Association’s 2011 CBA
which threatened a whole NBA season with their unprofessional clauses of hard salary cap, including less revenue share from the entire earnings of the league and short contracts.
Another clause which will be implemented soon that the teams now have to spend less money on International amateur free agents who have always demand more money than a usual local player. This might hurt the big teams like the New York Yankees, along with
Los Angeles Angels, Philadelphia Phillies, Texas Rangers, Milwaukee Brewers and Boston Red Sox but on the whole, every team will be happy on this decision.
For example, regarding the trend of signing an international free agent who is an inhabitant somewhere other than the U.S but with clear indication a U.S. territory holder or Canadian national can be signed once they turn 16-years-old while there will be
no limits on the extra money or bonuses and additional contracts given to those particular players.
Spending cap on international free agents will create much trouble-free environment in the MLB and will gain a positive response from many baseball experts.
