Question:

College Decision Question?

I am currently enrolled in a local community college pursuing a 2-year degree in Computer science. My goal is to either transfer to a four year university and finish my 4 year degree, or start another four degree altogether. My question is what should I do if I want to finish my 4 year in Computer Science and then start another four year degree program. I don't know if I would have to go to graduate school or if it is possible to simply sign on to another degree program at the same school where I received my first degree. Any info or advice will be greatly appreciated. Also, any decent web links would help as well. I have tried searching on my own, but nothing has been of much use.

Thanks in advance.

  1. When you transfer to a university for your bachelors degree, you can chose to major in computer science, or switch your major to something else, or, if you want to, you can actually double major in computer science and another subject. You'd have two majors, if you double majored.

From your question, I think you might actually want to double major. It sometimes takes a bit longer to complete a double major than just one major, but it'll take far less time, and be less expensive, to double major than to actually complete a BS in Computer Science, and then go back for a second bachelors.

It is, however, possible to complete a BS in CS, and then go back for a second bachelors. However, you can't get federal financial aid for a second bachelors degree course, which is why I said it'd be more expensive than double majoring.

You can get a masters degree after you get your bachelors. Depending on what you hope to get the masters in, you may need to have majored in certain subjects as an undergrad (the sciences and engineering are examples of that); or you may need simply to have completed certain pre-requisite coursework (medicine is an example of that); or you may not need any specific coursework at all (law and MBA are examples of that).

So my suggestion for you is to consider double majoring once you transfer to your university.
