College EMA...? Declined!!?

Hey, Apparently I'm not allowed any E.M.A money because my parents earn over 31k a year between them, how stupid is this?

I don't get any money off my parents, I have to earn it myself...so why the h**l aren't I allowed any EMA?

Also, I'm sure alot of people use their EMA to buy weed, alcohol and various other useless things in college, where I want to save it and start driving lessons soon...

This really annoys me... Any one else in the same situation? :(

  1. yeah i think its stupid . i was watching a advert about it on tv saying you can earn £30 a week and then at the end it said only if your parents income is less than £30,810. its stupid cuz she parents don't care and don't give you the money to get your own stuff. i got the same problem .

  2. Because EMA was brought in to allow children from low income households to stay on at school / attend college. You might not get money from your parents but do they feed you? Pay the gas and electricity bills? Allow you to live in their house?

You say you were going to save the EMA, if you can save it then you don't really need it do you?

Oh and if you decide to go to uni then your parents' income will be used to calculate your grant and loan.

Yes having parents who are reasonably wealthy can be so hard.

  3. Yep, but the idea is that EMA is used to buy stuff for college and to pay for bus pass, which to be fair some people do use it for. And the assumption is that as your parents earn enough to, they would buy these things for you.

AND to the top answerer. You don't get it for Nothing, you have to attend ALL of your classes and exams and have to be hitting your target grade.

  4. Lol yeah, but its just the sh*tt*r end of the stick. I know a guy whos parents earn under 10K (unlucky) and he gets 30 quid a week, 120 a month for doing NOTHING. and he spends 100% of it on games and consoles and things like that. Pfffft.

  5. Well i applied for EMA a few weeks ago and not heard anything back....

The whole idea for the EMA income guideline is because those parents who earn less than 31k their kids can have it to spend on books things for their course which they need and bus passes!!

EMA presume if your parents earn over 31k for your household income that your parents can buy it for you but in some cases it is not the case as you said your parents dont give you a penny of it yes i think it is unfair for EMA to presume that for parents who earn more than 31k but it is not completly true they do give you a penny Gas Electricity Food Clothes allow you to live in your house!!!

But I am sure with the Credit Crunch happening i would have thought EMA would scrap out the guidelines because of the fact people are being forced to drop out of work because their company has gone bust!!! Which to me is COMPLETLY Unfair!!!!

  6. Oh that is so unfair, it would be loads better if your parents didn't earn any money and all the household had to live off £100 a week. Yeah, then you could save your money and have driving lessons but bet your parents couldn't buy you a car.

  7. Err, that is what is going to happen to me next year, its so unfair.

They must know our parents arnt going to give us £30 a week, i will only be getting £20 a month of them so i have to work.

They need to give it to everyone regardless of how much our parents earn.

  8. Hi, i am in exactly the same position as you! i earn good money working at the weekends and am expected to pay for most things...

yes i know many people who don't use it for its proper purpose and it seems a bit strange that alot of people who get it have self-employed parents.... coincidence, i think not.

  9. Well the purpose of EMA it is designed to help you to buy stuff for college such as text books folders and stationary because I think thats why people need it and why the government would need to fund it for. But my spoilt friend says she 'deserves' EMA even though she gets everything she wants from her parents but no chance for her as it is obvious that her parents get more income. Whereas for me my parents have low income between themselves and I earn £30 a week. I use it to buy stationary clothes and things to eat. Even if I don't get EMA my mum and dad promises me that they can still give me money because they would want the best for me. By the way top answerer, you don't get it to do nothing because in order to get paid weekly, you have to attend ALL classes regularly because if you DON'T attend ALL classes uyou won't get paid for that week.

I even watched a video clip of it on EMA website that this girl uses it for clothes and college stuff.

  10. My parents earned just over £30,000 so I couldn't get EMA either and I was really annoyed when I heard that one guy at college, whose parents earned well over £30,000 was getting EMA! How ridiculous is that?! But I know that my friends who did get EMA they certainly saved it and hardly spent it, whereas other people I knew were always spending it and "had no money" even though they were getting £30 a week pluc two £100 bonuses!! (At Xmas and Easter!) Pretty unfair isn't it?!
