Question:

College Homework... too much already!?

Okay, I am freaking out and it's only my third day of classes. I spent 6 hours at the library yesterday, and 7 hours in my room doing homework today. I have a massive headache, and I still have a lot of work. A lot of it isn't due until Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, but I have this OCD thing where I can't stop working until everything is done.

I am a freshman and I've been talking to others... everyone I have talked to hasn't really had much homework at all. I think I have the professors that love giving work.

Nevertheless, I start a job next week (it's only 10 hours a week, thank gosh) and I will be a weekly writer for my college newspaper (which is a huge responsibility).

How do I de-stress? How can I manage this?!?! I know that it will only get harder.

  1. plan to spend 2 hours preparing for every hour you spend in class

sure hope that the gig with the newspaper is in your field of interest and earns brownie points

just a freshman and you have really loaded yourself down

learn to plan - and designate your work assignments

    all the best

  2. Hi ,

First of all you need to focus. Take one assignment at time. Do freewriting ,that is to write everything you know about the topic for 5 minutes . Just put down something don’t worry about spelling , organizing or whether to include this information in the work paper or not. Write a simple outline about your paper . An introduction , body and conclusion. Read the question carefully and make sure you understand what your teacher really wants.   Then go to the library , ask the librarian to help you find your resources , look at the table of content of each book , try to read fast ( skimming pages ) .  After that , start writing you assignment. It is usually easier to start writing the body ( choose the part that you think it is easy or interesting for you ) . Then write the introduction and the conclusion. Be specific and to the point. When you finish , put the paper aside for few days or hours if you don’t have enough time. After that review the paper , make the necessary changes , type it and give it to your teacher.

I used to write my homework in the early morning in weekends and before I have breakfast that is when I am focus 100%  LOL

It is usually chaotic when you are freshman but you will get used to it.

College days are fun Enjoy it !

  3. Get off tha comp and work girl.

    haha sorry.

Spread out your work. Do your least favorite stuff, then do some stuff you don;t hate as much, It'll be easier for you. Try and get over your OCD thing too, space it out. Don't so it all at one time, that;s what messing you up.

    Good Luck =)

  4. Take deep breaths between assignments.

  5. Get used to it. I'm going into my third year and university. There's so much and it goes by so fast. You won't be able to get it all done at once so you better get over that OCD thing or you will lose your mind.

  6. As a college graduate I understand how you feel.  May I add that if college was easy then everyone would have a degree and be making the big bucks.  I have been out of college for 6 years now and I don't regret all the heartache. I'm now in grad school so I'm going through it all over again lol  Here are some tips:

Make a list of what needs to be done (get a daily planner) write everything down including doc appt, b-day,homework assignments, work schedule.  Being organize is the key to a less stressful life.

Now getting back to making a list.  Make a list of all the assignments that need to get done and map out a game plan of what needs to be done. I always liked to get the easy stuff done first.  If any assignments require some supplies make a list so you can get it all at once. (say printing paper, construction paper, ink exc.)  Always make sure you have enough supplies so you don't have to run out at the last minute.

Always keep papers in more than two places.  Another words don't just save everything to your hard drive.  E-mail the papers to yourself or save on a disk, so in the event that something happens to your paper you can always run to the computer lab and print it out.

Always give yourself some time to yourself. Sometimes when life is hectic we forget about ourselves.  Each week whether it's an hour or 1/2 hour have some alone time.  Read a book, do a hobbie, take a hot bath with candles, meditate anything that requires some time by yourself where you can't be disturb.  Clear your head and relax the brain.

Have some fun! Always plan whether every week or month to have some fun with the girls or family!  Act goofy and don't be serious. Go to the movies, beach, bowling, bar (if you are old enough to drink).  If you don't have fun or enjoy yourself then you can become unhappy, stressed or maybe want to quit college.  Always remember college doesn't have to be completed in 4 years, don't stress taking 21 credits so you can get out in time.  You want to keep your GPA up because if you think of graduate school (maybe not right after college but always keep the option open) you would need to take the GMAT or GRE. Believe me it's no fun, but the score on the test depends on your undergraduate GPA. So you want to aim for mostly A's and B's.

Another stress reliever is exercise, vitamins and foods that will keep your energy up.  Take a walk in the park do something.  As for vitamins and foods high in energy you can do research to see what's the best for you.

Remember life is too short to stress over stupid stuff.  Always count to 10 before you react.  And if you have doubts about anything just do some research to see how much more money someone can make with a college degree.  And you will also be in a job that you would love too!

    Good luck and much success!

  7. How many classes are you taking and how many credit hours total? You may have overloaded yourself. I took 3 to 4 classes a quarter and I did around the minimum credit hours or barely above so I didn't get overloaded and did well that way. Some people took 5 and 6 classes and that is too much for college classes in my opinion you can't get overloaded or you won't continue and will not succeed. If it takes a year longer it's worth it rather than not getting through cause it was too overwhelming

  8. Praying helps.. but go talk to your professor for some mercy if you can.. if not then you should get some massage and have some free time and go back on track... that way your mind gets cleared and you'll focus more i guess.. also it'll be less stress for you

  9. 1) have a drink :) (not necessarily alcoholic..tea)

2)work out (endorphins help relieve stress and tiredness)

    3)take naps

    4)dance (2!)

    5) chocolate!  (its proven to improve people's mood (esp. women).

Apparently its almost like being high :D)

    6)watch a funny movie/show

  10. I know it can be tough. It really depends on how many credit hours you take, though. First semester I took 12 and I was fine. Second semester I took 18 and failed all my classes except one. I wouldn't suggest taking much more than 14 credit hours your first year.

Take a little bit of time each night to listen to music, or watch your favorite TV show, or just to relax. If you don't give yourself any sort of break from your homework, no matter how small, you'll stress out badly. Drop one of your classes, if you have to. I signed up for 16 credit hours and dropped a class because I'm going to be working and be president of two clubs.

Also, switch what homework you work on every once in a while. Like, if you get a bit tired of math, stop working on it! Switch to English, or something. When you get tired of something, you work slower. If you keep switching, though, you'll be able to work on it with no problem at all - you'll be able to think clearly :)

  11. wow. im not working until my second year of college. you need to distract yourself away from homework lol.

    lucky im a photo major
