Question:

College Major Possiblities?

by  |  earlier

0 LIKES UnLike

Okay, I'm a junior in high school and have no idea what I want to go to college for. Some things about me:

I'm exceptionally good at math/science

I like to write fiction short stories

I am artistic and am a good drawer

I play clarinet pretty well

I love to solve puzzles and riddles

I am obsessed with shows like CSI or Law & Order

I love animals

I don't think I would like or be able to handle anything medical

I love 'playing' with things and figuring out how they work

I love listening to music [almost all kinds]

I am in fairly good shape from volleyball and tennis

Can anyone suggest a college path? More than one would be appreciated!

  1. I'm exceptionally good at math/science

Probably the most important thing on this list! These skills are highly sought after. Computer Science, Engineering, and Information Technology (IT) would make good use of these skills, earn you a large salary, and make you extremely hireable. Biology and Chemistry would be great starting points for grad school.

I like to write fiction short stories

If you really want to write, you could major in English or Communications, both of which are very versatile majors; virtually every large company has a use for these grads. You won't start out earning the big bucks that you would in some fields, but you can work your way up. If you just want to take some writing classes during college, though, there's no need to major in these, because most universities (maybe all?) require several English Composition and Literature classes at some point or other, regardless of your major. You'll be able to fit them in no matter what you do. That said, I am an English/Comm major, and absolutely love it!

I am artistic and am a good drawer

Very cool! However, I'm assuming that you're not a GREAT artist who's PASSIONATE about it, or you would have listed it first. Take a few art classes in college for fun.

    I play clarinet pretty well

If you're in Band, this can be great on a college application, and can possibly earn you a scholarship. However, unless you want to teach music, it probably won't be much of a factor in deciding a major.

I love to solve puzzles and riddles

Me too! Computer Science and Engineering would challenge you and stimulate that puzzle-solving brain of yours. Both are math-intensive majors, and will earn a high income. Philosophy can also be enjoyable, but you need a Master's or PhD to really use it in the job world. Settle for taking Philosophy 101 for fun one semester.

I am obsessed with shows like CSI or Law & Order

Everybody is! However, these jobs require years of graduate school, are extremely competitive as far as gaining admission, and are not nearly as exciting as they look on TV. I say just keep watching the shows.  :-)

    I love animals

Again, everybody does. As with the art, I'm going to assume that you don't feel that animals are your life's calling, or you would have listed it up higher on the list. However, if you do decide you want to work with them, your aptitudes in math and science would be a huge plus for getting a Pre-Veterinary degree or Zoology degree (both of which would require further graduate school ro make full use of.) Your aversion to working in the medical field would probably make these poor choices for you, but you never know.

I don't think I would like or be able to handle anything medical

You show a lot of maturity and self-awareness to know this at your age! Many people don't find this out until halfway through medical school, so good for you for knowing your limitations.

I love 'playing' with things and figuring out how they work

Again, see comments above about working out puzzles. Also, this comment reminds me of my math teacher, who said that all Math majors love to fiddle with numbers and figure things out.  Mathematics maybe?

I love listening to music [almost all kinds]

Yep, we all do! Listen to your iPod in between classes.  :-)

I am in fairly good shape from volleyball and tennis

Those activities will look great on your resume, and you should consider playing on your school's team. Scholarship possibilities!

I'm including a site called "What Can I Do With This Major?" to give you some thoughts. Good luck to you!

  2. These days every Tom, d**k and Harry has a bachelors.  The best jobs/careers goes to those with post grad quals.  Now is the time to plan on what will give you the best graduate school choices and path.  Without doubt the major that is the most flexible and will give you the widest choice of post grad majors is math.  The one that usually is a problem is engineering - but math will even allow you to do that.  So my suggestion is do a degree in math, or the new growth area of computational science (which is really part of math anyway):

  3. Engineering or Architecture

  4. Finish all of your core classes first. A General Studies major would be a good place to start until you figure out for yourself what you want to do.

You're kind of all over the place (Art, Music, Math, Science, English, Criminal Justice, Med, Vet). Maybe take a few 101 classes that interest you to get a good insight into that subject.

  5. Forensics?

    -or-

sound coordinator-not sure if thats the name

  6. MAjor in accounting, go into the FBI

accounting covers your math skills and the actual job you study for would be exciting, just like csi

    good luck
